Here's a freeform work in progress. I think that I like it, but then I start wondering if it's too much — for example, maybe the left side should be less curved because the bottom point is off-center.

I agree, the first two are easy fixes. The last one is the "try to use all the material" trap. It will look much better recut and there are a lot of good design choices.
The more advanced fixes are where the shape is actually symmetrical, but the push pull of the pattern makes the cab look off. When I have no lines to follow and the cab is wonky, I get lost and don't know how to correct. My wife can look at a cab and knows exactly where the corrections need to be made to make it look right.

I would move on to the next cab. Before cutting it, I might have considered in an in curve for the top. I like how the material is framed.

I've done that myself. Personally, I think it looks too heavy on the right, but it fits the pattern so well.... Maybe take some off the top and middle right side of the stone?

Now, why would you assume I have a sewing mat?
It's from a 4x6 3m post it of graph paper I got to help me lay out intarsia.

When I listed the Montana’s I laid the first box out on my wife’s sewing mat. Not a good idea. Had a pattern like your post it there.

Since I sometimes get lost trying to figure out a correction. I trace the shape on to a piece of paper and draw a center line.

Tela I didn’t mean any gender based assumption at all. I can edit if you like.

There is a very long story behind the reason for owning it. But, I find it very satisfying to have it around.

Back to... yeah. I really appreciate what the earthlings have shared. There’s more to it than I thought.
Freeformers aren’t just being “lazy”.
The symmetrical perfectionist isn’t being “boring”.
We are all trying to bring the material to it’s full potential, (in our opinion). Differences of opinion can and should exist, else it would be very boring and lifeless.

For the helluvit, I got a couple examples of what I consider fails. These were both purchased a long time ago. I need to rework them because they drive me nuts the way they are. The first is an example of when a symmetrical shape goes wrong. It's a very small issue (well, 2 actually), but they just ruin the stone for me. The top left side has a bump, but the bottom really bugs me the most. It won't take much to fix it, though.
Here it is more obvious. The top left is higher.
I purchased this koroit in a lot. The diagonal pattern just doesn't work with the freeform. I call this a freeform fail. The shape waaaay too "freeform". I won't be left with too much when I rework. Whoever cut that Koroit needs to be slapped around a bit. That's just a horrible shape for that stone.
The other two, IMO are just badly cut. An easy fix for you, Tela.

Many of the cabs that come across this board are freeform style. Usually to bring out the scene or pattern in the rock. I have a natural tendency for symmetry ie. I love a neatly pruned shrub or centered text. Is one preferred above the other? Is it a fashion that comes and goes? FWIW I’m not talking about a jewelry setting but just a cabochon. My 2 cents: a free form can still have a symmetrical flow, and you can see when it is off, and you can almost feel it . i have a box of them that i throw at my cat when he is making noise when i am trying to take a nap. this ,in turn,is a double fail, because my cat (Ziggy) then proceeds to bat the lumpy cab around the room, making more noise than he was making in the first place. at this point? i then go out to the garage, grouchy from no nap,and make another lumpy, lop sided cab to put in the cat toy box.

Personally, I like this cab a lot. I would just straighten out that top curve a bit and it will be perfect!
