This Mohs 7 category feels like it's all over the place. Granted the big quartz I did and this tigers eye have different dimensions and surface area, which certainly must be a factor for grinding. In the first 4 weeks of grinding the big quartz went from 1655g to 1471g, a 184 gram loss for an average of 46g/week. In a same 4 week period the tigers eye went from 1043g to 839g for 204g loss for an average of 51g/week. First impression suggests it must be softer... and maybe it is, but 5g/week difference when the rocks take up different dimensions in the barrel makes it hard to make that apples to apples comparison. Okay, decided to google wiki it. Tiger's Eye: 5.5 to 6 Quartz: 7 Amethyst: 7 Agate (generic): 6.5 to 7 Huh look at that, the wiki page uses that giant crazy lace the opal guy tumbled for its imageChalcedony: 6 to 7 Carnelian: 6 to 7 I would of told you from experience that amethyst seems to grind the fastest and carnelian the slowest, in direct opposition to what I posted above. Even within this whole silicon dioxide family the hardness range is all over the place, with conflicting information about hardness depending on the source. The Quartz Page throws tiger's eye into the mohs 7 category. Heh... to be fair... tigers eye got mostly 46/70 SiC and the Quartz got 60/90 SiC... so I don't even know what I'm rambling on about... May as well change 5 variables and argue which gave the result.

There are no rules The manuals mean nothing There is no spoon For the rocks to change You must change Cast off your preconceptions Your wants and desires Listen to the rock Then will beauty emerge.

Only two grams lost in 500 and I’m thinking that’s mighty odd. Took a minute to notice it was AO, so I guess that’s why reduction was ~negligible.

Big quartz lost 11g for the same stage. Then again, there's quite a difference in size/mass/surface area sooo .

Great polish. Especially considering it was done on tigereye. Crystalline quartz and tigereye, nice work.

Hello Benathema and everyone, I wanted to know how to polish red Tiger's Eye and this thread with pictures is going to be a big help. Now I know the hardness of Tiger's Eye is 5.5 to 6, is it the same for red Tiger's Eye? Thanks for sharing this adventure.
Just saw someone's post about tumbling red Tiger's Eye and found out red isn't a natural occurrence but happens through baking. So, my question about whether the red is the same hardness as plain old Tiger's Eye has been answered, unless it softens through the baking process. So thankful for this forum.
