SO, After seeing nothing worth buying anywhere,as seems to be the case of late, i decided,on the spur of the moment,to head down to clear creek, south of Hollister approx 2 hours from home. Plasma agate being the targeted species the day,i was told there was a good spot from my trusty rock hound pro's, 4 wheel drive is necessary, as well as a $26 fee,20 to drive .and 6 to be there. i had seen a handful of eye catching cabs, which sparked my intent. after purchasing 30,or 40 dollars worth of sub par crumbles, i decided it was time to dig my own dirt IMG_5713 by paul forsythe, on Flickr IMG_5707 by paul forsythe, on Flickr IMG_5711 by paul forsythe, on Flickr IMG_5709 by paul forsythe, on Flickr IMG_5766 by paul forsythe, on IMG_5770-1 by paul forsythe, on Flickr IMG_5810 by paul forsythe, on Flickr i know the trouble it takes to get to the good stuff but like dad always said"you want something done right? do it yourself! got about a hundred pounds of high grade i'm gonna slice up and i will spread the love as i go Hooked

Wow lucky you!!! That’s amazing. My god 100 pounds. I hate to think what I’d do to be able to bring a haul like that home. Looks like lots of fun and OMG what an awesome pic of an awesome cab in the last photo. Great job and thanks for sharing all the cool pics.

@hookedonrocks you have an artist's eye and a hounder's nose.
Beautiful haul and those cabs are, of course, stunning!

I would love to find a seam like that, but that is definitely hard rock mining.

Maybe a dumb question but what makes this plasma agate? Plume, Moss, and sagenite I understand but being a jasper and agate novice I’m not sure what the “plasma” is.

Plasma Agate is the name that was given to the rock by rockhounds. It was never commercially mined that I know of but lots of rockhounds have dug large amounts of the material over the years. It is specifically from the Clear Creek Management Area in California and collecting is limited by the BLM to "reasonable" amounts for "personal use" and you have to buy permits to enter the area. It is composed of a bunch of different minerals including cinnabar, jadeite, serpentine, and chalcedony among other minerals found in the area. The BLM closed the area for a short time because of concerns of asbestos but as of now it's back open.

I’ve seen the term used a bit in old Lapidary Journal and Rock And Gem articles but never understood the significance of it. Thanks for the reply!

It's actually more of a conglomerate of various minerals. I didn't know too much about it until I was given the opportunity to go collect it with some people who were familiar with the area.

If I could drive two hours and get that, I’d be there every day off from work. It is a permit only area and BLM only allows 5 one day permits per year per person for the area where it can be collected. Otherwise I'm sure a lot of people would be in there collecting massive amounts of it.
