I was so impressed with the color and lines in this piece of Marston wood replacement, I had to share it with somebody. That means you guys, (and gals). Sometimes called Marston Jasper, I usually call it Marston petrified wood. It is wood replaced with agate or wood replacement. I know I send some of you folks some. It has a green outer layer with red inside of that and then there are all kinds of things that occur beyond those two layers. This was a piece about the size of of a pint of milk, but it looked real interesting, and now I have a Slab saw!! I need to Opticon it at this point, since it does have alot of pits and stuff I'd like to eliminate, but in its more rough form, here it is... Front and back, shown with 2 different backgrounds. Not all Marston is this good, mostly it flows from color to color with some bracciation, but this cut was near the matrix and I'd have to guess that alot of activity had been going on during it's formation. Thanks for looking!! -Banjo

Man that stuff is really different isn't it. I love that green part near the bottom where you can see the pieces that would fit together ... that is so cool. Can't wait to see what you do with it, any ideas yet?

I'm planing on fixing a few nasty chips in the edge, then Opticon the thing, since it has a couple of pits. Repolish it and just make some sort of a gold wire wrap frame type thing, since wide pendants don't hang so good. But it is clear agate in some spots, and with the lines and healed fractures I'd like to keep it in one piece. So far so good. It's been somewhat polished, but there are some porous areas I'd like to seal. Even then pictures don't show up the color that well. I'm gonna go look for some more of this stuff -Later then... -Banjo

Hey Cookie, I was wondering to and found this page on it. OpticonIt's an epoxy resin that will cover up fractures and stuff. Pretty neat that you can do that, wondering how long it lasts. Cher

I couldn't tell you how long it lasts, but because it is just a filler and not under any kind of stress, I imagine it will last along time after I am dead and gone.

well i want to hear all about it when you use it. it says to heat it to a low viscocity for it to fill the fractures best. now how would one do that?

oh my, we have the same ol' faded fake wood formica countertops..(young girls they do get weary, wearing that same ol funky dress..)
nice rock, Banjo, i'm interested in Opticon too, i got the general impression that it was "cheating", but after losing a few good cabs to tiny imperfections, am not so sure.
keep us informed of your progress in this area,
KD

Ok, almost there. As far as Opticon progress; I read the directions that came with the 2 part resins. So, I'm thinking. I'm going to soak the stone in Acetone for a bit, then it goes into the resin and is warmed in the resin solution in the oven for a bit more. ...More to follow.

That's a very good deal you got there! I don't think alot of people are familiar with Marston Jasper. You'll like tumbling that batch. and you will post pictures, no?

As soon as I can Banjo. I'm really behind. We sold our house and are moving, so other than the tumblers running, I'm so far behind. I've got to get everything moved and put away so I can play with that Genie when it gets here. I've only found time to use the saw I bought from you about three times and my few awkward cuts are in the tumbler.

This is what I know. It comes from the Marston Ranch. Hence the name Marston. So far so good. It is agate replacement, or, yeah petrified wood. The wood has been replaced with agate. The Marston is so colorful and dense in color that it sort of loses it Agate quality of translucence, so then it is refered to as Jasper. So as far as I have been told, it is all the same, different name. I also have some opalized wood where it has been replaced with an Opalite. Not the sparkely stuff we think of like fire opal, but more like hard marshmallow candy. Anybody have a better explanation, feel free to chime in
