I went for a fortification pattern in a Laguna agate slab. I didn't get an image of the rough because it had so much rim-rot I wasn't sure I could make a cab from it until I did some edge trimming. So this is essentially a preform:

Alright, I actually made a cab today just for the contest. From start to finish in about three hours (insert snail emoticon).
It's a little slice of an agate nodule that I got in a bargain scraps bin at the San Jose show a couple of years ago. I do not know the origin but I believe it could be one of several species of Mexican agate nodules so I'll just call it an agate nodule.
My first pass on the dome I was hoping to incorporate some of the matrix and make a long tall cab but the material wasn't having it. All the brown area crumbled and disappeared quickly leaving only agate behind.
Ok, here's my entry, just under the wire! Sorry, no pic of the slab. Dremeled freeform Crazy Lace, tumbled in rotary for a week and vibe for five days.

Yippee I made it back home in time to make a cab for the contest!! I'm really struggling with photography but here it is (for now), I'll keep my fingers crossed for better pictures tomorrow, I'd love to suggest that a video clipbe added to the contest rules?
This is Parcelas Agate or Purple Passion Agate, cut in a straight topped low dome shield/badge shape. It's my first cab in almost two months since I made the orbed OJ for a previous contest, and it posed a couple problems, firstly it undercuts in the gold mossy areas so I decided to ditch the angled girdle that I typically put on my cabs. Second, apparently my 8,000 polishing pad has a contaminant on it, I had to go back to the 1200 and the 3000 TWICE UGH, before I realized what the issue was. Next time around I went straight from 3 to 14,000. I think the polish could be better but I don't have time to fix up a new 8000 pad. Photography is killing me which isn't normal! I generally always use the mid morning light from my big kitchen window but today it's mid afternoon, and the front yard and indoor pics just weren't good at all. I went to the back deck and I'm happy with the video at least. I feel like I'm complaining but the rules said to tell about any problems
So this is it unless you see another post with fresher photography over the next couple of days. It sure felt good to get back to cutting.

alright, here is my entry for July...after cutting dozens of crazy lace cabs i had run out of interesting banded or fortification agates. i rummaged around for something to cut and found this material. not sure what it is nor if even qualifies for contest but is all I have to enter. pls let me know if doesnt meet contest theme. hardest part was finding an area without distracting fractures. this one still has a few but dont think they stand out too much. It was shaped and polished with my trusty dremel. polish could be better. 34 x 22 x 5mm.
didnt take pic of slab but this is the end cut right before slab I used.
Wow! There really are some amazing cabs in this month's contest!
