I've gotten a few questions about what I do with coprolite specimens and how I process them. After a field trip of gathering them I stack them into piles to await sorting into specimens or slabbing material. Specimens get sawn in half and when I wash them I sort them into two piles,.. specimens to keep for my collection and others to sell. I try to be very selective about the ones I keep. At this point I photograph specimens I'll keep just before I stack them into 55 gallon drums to await polishing. These are mostly what you see on this thread.

Do you see yourself putting a dent in how much is out there? If "out there" means in my pillars of poo in my orchard, yes, but slowly. If "out there" means the deposits I've found in the field, then the answer is no, not even perceptible because I pick up less than 1% of what I find, if even that. The reason is I try to be extremely selective about what I harvest from the hunting grounds so that I only take what I can use. It's important that the deposits aren't raped like the recent dino bone scandal.

Here's something different. There's a pebble embedded in the edge of this guy and I think it's a gastrolith. It could have been driven into the turd when it fell upon the turf but I am more inclined to think it made the journey through the animal as a gastolith because it is embedded deeper than I envision from falling upon the pebble. Plus it's well rounded like many gastoliths tend to be. That doesn't rule out that it could have just been a worn pebble. Anyway I decided to bisect the pebble on the saw and see what we learn.

Alex, you really got that one right! The video is cool and I've already shown it to a buddy at work who was wondering how to make a cab.
