Should be able to drive 16 hours round trip and fit a saw in the back of my Subaru. Doesn't leave a lot of time to take all the best rocks (that you want) from the piles though 8 hours 1 way isn’t bad. Take your tent along.

I have a camp trailer out at the rock pile that you are welcome to use if you want.

No wifi but you get cell service there. I have an irrigation pond close by you can jump in if you want!

aloha,
Just wanted to share pix of my recently purchased highland park 16 inch slab saw, old and used but in good shape, got for $200.
I thought I could just attach them like in the user thingie but now the only button I see wants me to sign up for some program that I won't sign up for. Probably there is an easy way I haven't figured out, or maybe there isn't.
I need to grease the whole thing but not sure if I shoud take it apart or just apply grease externally. And the tensioner pulley seems to move and make noise. And I'm wondering how much oil I need to put in to wet the 14 inch blade it came with. Maybe I should get a new hp 16 in blade.
Wish I could post pix.

LS-14 or bust. Best model I've ever used. side note: the LS-14 is also the only model I've ever used. So my assessment may be a bit skewed. That said, I agree with buying used for several reasons. You won't necessarily save money, but cleaning up and restoring a machine will get you very familiar with the entire workings of the machine in a way that I don't think manuals can necessarily do. Additionally, and this is more philosophy than anything, There are a lot of folks who have lapidary saws that they end up needing to sell due to age/health issue. All that said, I personally want to build my own. I'm a huge fan of gravity fed machines, and I'd like to take an old carriage style saw and rig it up so that instead of fussing with a drive motor, it's driven via pulley and weights on one end. I can understand the enthusiasm of the other members regarding the saw pictured in the image. I don't know a whole ton about welding, but the appearance of that particular part makes me think it might not do well under stress. Doesn't mean it won't work, but I can understand the caution that others have in that regard.

I am very unhappy with my Covington. I bought it new for about half of a HP16 ($3,000). If money were no object, I would send the Covington on it's way and for the amount of use I give a large saw, would be happy with the HP 16. It makes most sense to fix the Covington and continue to complain about it.

I would never ever recommend a Cov 16” to another soul.

I wanted a new saw and my only choices were the Covington or a Lortone Panther. I paid $1500 new for the Covington.

I do like the old saws. The best deal I ever stumbled into was an old 24" HP about 3 years ago. It was on Craigslist and I just happened to get in 10 minutes before the 2nd person. Looked up the serial number and I believe it was built in 1964. The thing is built like a tank, lots of heavy steel everywhere. I got it for $1200, cleaned it up and it's been running great ever since. My son and I once we got it off the trailer and rolled it up the drive way to the garage. IMG_0897 by Findrocks, on Flickr The seller even threw in about 400+ pounds of material, Brazilian. Choyas, and misc agate as he was moving out of country and did not want it. Sometimes you just get lucky!

Used equipment is out there. It is often sitting in someone's garage, barn or back yard. I just posted a find that is available in the Lapidary equipment section I am trying to keep out of the landfill. Rockhounds are getting old and this equipment will outlast most of us. Over the last 3 years I have saved several good pieces of equipment from the dump. I do not buy or sell any equipment just pass on the information to others who will restore and use it. Many of the people running estate sales do not know what it is and it gets sold for scrap or worse just hauled to the dump. Prices might be crazy once it hits CL but some people are happy to have an oil filled rust bucket hauled off the property. Thanks to everyone who has restored and is using an old saw.
