woodman does all flint normally have such a nice pattern as that one does or is this a once in a ton piece I have seen flint chunks that sometimes have fossils inside of them or on them and were dark to black in color (even a little glassy) but with no indication that there any pattern inside of them

Thank you I didn’t think flint was worth bothering with but after seeing that piece I think I will have to try cutting some. The river is loaded with flint from back in the day sailing ships use to use it as balist then when in port ready to pick up trade goods they would unload it throwing it overboard in the river. The river banks here down town are loaded with it from around the world.

Could find some winners, though certain areas such as Nether's Ridge are more likely to have interesting colors and or patterns than others.

Sounds like a trip hounding the river to take a look at it and see if I can luck out. Won’t be to soon this last week has been in the mid to high 90s and the humidity thick enough to cut with a knife.

The Photo of Polish Flint I posted is flint form Poland. Don't expect to find that pattern in any old flint! I bought this slab at a rock show a few years back and have had it laying around unpolished to I finally got it done!.

That's a gorgeous piece! Love, love, love it!
From what I understand Polish flint is no longer being exported from Poland, so that makes it extra special!

It also makes it expensive when you can find it!

I had to look twice to see if this was "polish" or "Polish" flint. Verb vs noun. Lovely stuff. True artwork within the stone.

Works of art like this make it extra special to flint knappers. To a knapper, this is eye-candy. I did not make these[/url]

woodman does all flint normally have such a nice pattern as that one does or is this a once in a ton piece I have seen flint chunks that sometimes have fossils inside of them or on them and were dark to black in color (even a little glassy) but with no indication that there any pattern inside of them Not all flint is Polish flint. Every piece of Polish flint that I have seen has the patterns in it. I'm from Poland so I can tell something about these flints. We have a lot of flints but most often are black or brown (chocolate flint). Some flints from glacial deposits have really cool colour like red, orange, yellow or even blue, but it's only a few milimeters coating link, link, link (this one looks almost like an agate). We also have interesting flints called "świeciechowski", it's brown and have some bright spots (calcite intrusion) link. Finally we also have big deposit of stripped flint. Brighter strips are actually parts with more micro holes. Nobody yet knows why it forms like that. You can find it in glacial deposits, somewhere around normal flints or in near Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski where it creates deposits with only stripped flint. Biggest flints can weight almost tonne, but usually it weights about 5-15 kg (10-30 lbs). Actually most of it deposits is in forests where you can't dig, on fields where nobody will let you dig, or in private limestone mine where also you can't dig... but there you can find stripped flint on small dumbs (most of it is small pieces, but some of it can be satisfying.. Biggest piece I have weights 26 lbs. In Poland it costs about 3-10 USD per lb of course rocks. Sorry for bad English, I'm not very good in languages.

That was pretty interesting I still plan on checking out the river for sure before the summer is over. You all have peeked my curiosity to see what may be waiting to be found. Even if I only find some with a fossil in it Thank you
