I fixed the pair with the flat spots so that's it for the day.

I dopped one pair of Horse Canyon and tomorrow I will start on a 2 pair stack; Horse Canyon and Blue Mountain. The Blue Mountain is bottom right of the first picture. A thin slab with a pattern not good for a cab but should make some nice earrings. That's all my earring preforms. This pair has the nicest 'matching' pattern. I bought 20 pounds of Willow Creek rough from Tony and have a lot of slabs. I need to dig out a slab and make a cab to match the earrings. I found a few slabs and can try this one: Not sure about the fracture, but I can move the layout. Nice material but might sell easier as a cab earring set.

I completed a pair of Horse Canyon and assembled the Horse Canyon, Blue Mountain stack. After lunch I'm going to set up the trim saw for a Willow Creek cab to match the earrings and a couple Morgan Hill earring preforms.

I worked on the stack with the 80 grit and the Morgan Hill earrings. One scrap was raw and the other one had a fracture. They should come out nice. I also trimmed the 30x40 Willow Creek that matches the earrings I made. Now I rest.

Use plenty of superglue and no worries. Just put in oven at low temp and they come right apart.

Another alternative is to glue pieces together with a thick piece of paper between. The paper allows any solvent to penetrate the union better than the stone/stone contact. Carpenters glue works fine with paper as the inside layer.

That's all of them. I have some Butterfly Wing jasper coming soon and may make a pendant with matching earrings using dops.

Separated by a head, the ear rings are a close enough match. We tend to compare them side by side, but that's not they way they are worn or seen. I resisted making ear rings for a long time, but started again when a friend pointed out that her tolerance for the match was more practical than mine. Today's experiment was taking small natural shapes of obsidian nodules (xxxx tears in a political sensitive world) and mounting them as close matches in terms of size but not exactly the same shape. I'm betting my friend will love them because she has an obsidian pendant and ring that match in color and shine.

I never made a cab with the Willow Creek earring material so I ground and dopped a preform. I trimmed the Owyhee a while ago, but it wasn't as interesting enough. I can match it with the Owyhee earrings.

My wife collected cabs for a long time so I was familiar with top quality work. My strengths are finding material and identifying patterns for cabs which are similar skills. I was waiting for feedback from the person I sent the 10 pairs of earrings. She wants more. I sell cheap and making earrings allows me to use material that is not particularly suitable for cabs. I go for the best pattern or patterns from a slab and there is left over material. I can stand mixing in some earrings when cutting cabs.

I don't think I will bother making more stacks. I will keep making earrings because I have a customer that will buy any I make. We negotiated a rock bottom price. It is a hobby and repetitive work is not fun, but I get to use material that would otherwise not be used. The earrings don't need to be perfect, no back polishing and a pair of earrings is taking about the same time as a cab and I don't need to list them. The satisfaction comes from mastering a new skill.
