This thread is meant to encourage newcomers, and show them that all of us started somewhere. Please post pictures of early works and contrast them with examples of what you are producing now. All categories are welcome (this is why I put it in the General Rocks Board). Let's see:

I'm gonna sticky this for awhile so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle.
Anyone can see my early stuff in the wire wrapping section.

One of my first cabs ever. No dome, whatsoever, so, predictably, there is a plethora of scratches: Red Brecciated jasper by Stephan T., on Flickr Not all freeforms have a pleasing shape (plus, no dome, lots of scratches): Yellow and Red Brecciated Jasp-Agate by Stephan T., on Flickr I think the Stone Canyon police still has a warrent for my arrest on abuse of material. Luckily, a few years later, I modified it into this, which, at least has a dome: Re-formed Stone Canyon-type jasp-agate by Stephan T., on Flickr Some more-current work: DSC_0902_"Autumn leaves" Stone Canyon-type jasper by Stephan T., on Flickr Stay tuned, and please contribute.

And remember: they aren’t fails. They are points on the learning curve, especially when they involve technical difficulties and learning opportunities presented by the material.

This isn't super recent but still one of my favorites. It is completely freehand. No template or mark up. Chrysoprase. I still have it.

OMG! I can't believe there was a time when your tumbles weren't perfectly shiny. What a difference in those pictures!

They definitely show two things: 1. Progress. The last three are pretty amazing. 2. That we are often hardest on ourselves. All of them are better than I could do.

Ok, I haven't been doing cabbing or wrapping very long. You asked for it. Some of my first ones, I don't like them at all. And some of my more recent ones. I still have a long way to go.

I started making cabs 20 years ago. Gave away some and kept the rest. Last year, I decided to start selling and went through my boxes. I have over 1,000 cabs that I would never try to sell. After 18 years I didn't learn much. In the last few years, I've been doing a lot more work, some with challenging material and have learned a lot.

Thanks to all of you who are contributing to this thread...and a special kudos to stephan for thinking of this thread. Spectacular thread idea! It was inspired by Tela’s willingness to share her less-than-favorite pieces. I thought we needed more of that. I remember how frustrating it can be early on.

We all have to start somewhere. Me, I taught myself, my only teachers have been on here, the net and books. The cab challenges have be invaluable. Then Now Now faceting is a whole different ball game
