I'm considering getting a glass grinder so I can try groove wrapping. Any advice on which kind to get/not get, are used machines worth looking into? Thanks!

All I can say is I got a used Glastar on ebay and I've had no troubles. They are simple machines.

Right on Mike
If u can find a used one Definitely
Might be hard to find
I’ve used old Gryphette and Glastar The machines last That my experience new ones are not that bad of a set back especially with how productive you be & they double up as a good profiling machine...

I was looking on ebay and thinking it might be fun to try. Thanks Tela!

Thanks Ed. There seems to be a pretty decent amount of used ones out there. Or maybe I'll tell my boys that's what I want for Christmas- I've been pretty good...mostly. Might be hitting you up for advice, though!

There's a brand called Aanraku Twofers that sells cheaper bits that fit most of these grinders. You can save quite a bit. You can buy drum or barrel type bits for them, too, suitable for doing cabochon shaping.

This is the Glastar Old & borrowed The grinding bit is 1” diameter think the grinding bit on the Gryphette are ½ diameter can get those measurement later or it may be listed on the product specifications The Glastar machines are a more stout machine The bearing really are smooth free spinning Altho my Gryphette is 15 years old and still spins well that the machine I use for grooving don’t suppose making your own stand up vertical dremel grinder would be to difficult ? but at the price & convenience for Gryphette it may be more of a hassle the machines are necessary grind arsenal to have…modesty ___________________________________ O I should add That I do most my touch up profil’n & Groovy’n dry guess lots of folks use a sponge did that in the beginning But misplaced my sponge one day & then went dry Actually I dip the stohn in water Or use wet toothbrush little water goes a long ways ya knohs it just tweeking touch up and groov’n ur in ^ out

These can usually be found 'used" for about 35 dollars on Craigslist. I was interested and last year I found one for that price about 75 miles from where I live. When I arrived I discovered the seller decided to sell it out from under me that same day. I kind of lost interest after that. But yes, there are a few solid manufacturers, and you need that bit to fashion the groove.
