This is so cool that your FIL is the guy who knows everyone! What an awesome opportunity to hound untouched areas. I bet there are gobs of Fairburns in that huge pile of rocks in that picture you posted.
As an aside, even though it's getting cooler and the snakes will hibernate pretty soon, I bought Vince and I snake gators like these to help prevent getting bit by a rattler. The work great against jumping cholla, too!

Nice one, Jason. I'm on my way, where do you want to meet up?
Just kidding, that's awesome that you'll be able to hound some private land, good luck!

You know the deal! When you get tired of getting all these cherry-picking "easy" finds down there in NE, head on up to SD and I'll show you how to walk a lot...and that's about it! LOL Teasing. I know you have your share of walks in the rocks with nothing to show but worn out soles on your shoes.

Lucky you... not just for the new rock opportunities, but for having the rocks enrich your relationship with your father in law. Precious. I know I get a little excited even talking about Fairburns, but you're right I'm beyond touched that he is involving himself like this. This is so cool that your FIL is the guy who knows everyone! What an awesome opportunity to hound untouched areas. I bet there are gobs of Fairburns in that huge pile of rocks in that picture you posted.

The work great against jumping cholla, too! Thank you so much! I'm blessed to have him as my father-in-law...for many reasons! I think my wife would probably love to get a pair of those for snakes...but she'd probably be even more comfortable in a complete set of medieval armour! LOL

Another giant wife-devouring snake DSC_2993_Sharp-tailed snake by Stephan T., on Flickr A co-worker caught this little cutie in his kitchen and brought it to work for me to photograph. In spite of the cool weather, this is squirmy little bugger. I'll keep trying to get a fully in-focus picture, before releasing him/her. Kinradite slab added for color complement. Quarter for size reference (or lack thereof).

I avoid snakes and spiders. If I could tell which were harmless, I would be fine with them.
BTW, I'm glad you have such a nice relationship with your father-in-law. Lots of fun outings.

Lots of fun outings. jasoninsd is the one with the rancher FIL. No such luck for me. As for snakes, here in NorCal, we have only one venomous one to worry about: the Northern Pacific rattlesnake, and they are pretty docile: Wild Northern Pacific Rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus oreganus) by Stephan T., on Flickr some people confuse them with gopher snakes, but they actually look pretty distinct: IMG_6855_Another beautiful juvenile gopher snake by Stephan T., on Flickr I think SoCal might have two or three species of rattlers (depending on how far East you get). And, in the Eastern portion, as you get closer to Arizona, maybe some coral snakes, and then you have to remember, "Red touch black, safe for Jack. Red touches yellow, kills a fellow," to distinguish them from Arizona king snakes.... Don't want to mess that one up.

We found a snake-worm, or was it a worm-snake in our family room a year or so. I don’t know how he got in. There is a photo of him on this forum. Somewhere. Not scary. Pencil thin.

So, this morning my father-in-law called me around 7am, and once again said he's got a new spot for us to go. He owns some land down by the Cheyenne River (south of Fairburn) and one of his neighbors down there who owns land actually on the river was having some flooding issues with the Cheyenne last year. So, the neighbor had to divert the entire river. Subsequently, that left the old riverbed dry...and no one has hounded it yet! He said we'd go down there next week. He asked if I was going to head back down to Fairburn today. I said I wasn't, but since he brought it up, maybe I would! LOL I put the house doors I replaced this summer in the back of the truck as he mentioned he could use them. I called and said I'd drop them off this afternoon on the way back from Fairburn. I went back to where I found the Fairburn yesterday, but no luck finding one there today. I was there until around 2:30 and I was kinda beat, so I headed back to the farm to drop off the doors. When I got to the farm my father-in-law asked if I wanted to go down to the river. I said "I thought you wanted to go next week." He replied, "Not that place, a different one." I was pretty whooped and wasn't too sure about going, but I could see it in his eyes he was pretty excited to take me down there, so I told him I'd love to go. So, we hop in the truck and I drive all the way back to where I was just at , and head further south for quite a bit. We get to the property right next to the river and there is river rock everywhere! As the Cheyenne's water level rises it spreads the rock out all over the place. Tons of exposed rock bars. By this time, we've only got about an hour or so of good daylight left. We only needed five minutes! It's not the biggest or best Fairburn Agate, but the banding runs down the entire seam and around the edge. There's a lot of small banding pockets which are too small for me to get pics. We were both pleased as punch! Now I really can't wait until we go to the river-rerouted property! It's about a mile from where we went today.

Once upon a time In November 1998 While I was camping In the frozen outback of Northern Nevada
I was soaking in the Hot springs alone when 3 snakes slithered into the pool of 100oF water
They swam by and said Hi before they crawled back into the ground

jasoninsd sorry I hijacked the thread with snake talk. They are fascinating creatures. Can’t wait to see more of your agate finds.

Nice one,Jason. Any Fairburn is a good Fairburn and any day hounding is better than a day of working! Keep it up!

They were long and skinny like your typical Garden Snake. I would like to think I would've calmly stayed there and just watch them go away...but I'm thinking in that particular scenario with regards to the fight or flight reflex, I would've been closer to Icarus than Ares!!! Nice one,Jason. Any Fairburn is a good Fairburn and any day hounding is better than a day of working! Keep it up! 😁 Thanks Mike! I don't think I'll ever catch up to you and your collection, but I'm going to give it my best shot! LOL Everyone needs a FIL like yours. I'm with you on this one! He's got a good heart and just loves getting to know anyone. We were just leaving yesterday and ran across a guy out fishing (another of my FIL's passions). So, he chatted with him for 10-15 minutes while I walked the bank letting him tell HIS fish stories to the other guy! LOL

When I was out with him from the age of 5 to 55, I could always count on him running into people who knew him. I was always impressed. That was my Dad- Mr. Gregarious. None of his kids got his gift, except maybe my younger brother.
