Does anyone recognize these materials? stewdogg sent this to me after he picked them up at the Madison rock swap. Labeled "old timers collection"... First pic is a conglomerate of Thundereggs... Second pic is not the same type of egg as the first pic, but also a bit unusual... Correction, I got them from an old timers collection that I got to go through a bit this summer. I was told he collected most of this stuff in the 60's. jasoninsd, Anything in the box marked "Old timers" collection was from the stuff collected in the 60's... that dino bone included. The only ting I got from the Madison show was the Montana Agate... most everything was way too overpriced! One fella was selling golf ball and smaller Lakers for $20/lb!!

That's still cheaper than eBay. I recently saw a listing for 3, totaling 1.4 ounces, marked down to $11.99!That's almost $140/pound (or "lub," if you prefer ).

I knew if I posted some off-the-wall story about how you got these, you'd post on the forum again! LOL I either totally misunderstood, or was so excited about getting the box of tape that I just got all my facts mixed up! LOL Wait until you see a couple of those Lakers...I'm hoping they'll cab up really nicely! Jadedvision tossed out the idea that second one maybe came from the Wiley Wells area in Southern California. He might be spot on with that ID. I still have no clue on those "conglomerate" pieces!

Another dragon from Mt. Hay, Queensland Australia. Same location as the Rainforest Jasper Mine The upper part of the volcanic pile was littered with thundereggs.

If you look at rainforest jasper closely, it’s a bunch of miniature thundereggs in matrix. Nice dragon, and I love the speckles.

I am excited to see the lakers and those are from the old timers collection as well... he had some really good stuff and I hope they'll have me back next spring for more rummaging. Is all of the light colored area in the conglomerate rock sandstone?

Dang, that looks a heck of a lot closer to the ones you sent me! Did you get a load of the fortifications in that piece! However...while I am pretty sure the old timers caddy was a "boat"...I'm betting it wasn't the kind of boat to get him to Australia and back! LOL Second however...maybe it was something he acquired outside of his own personal hounding... ETA: I don't know if it's sandstone...I know it's a tan colored stone!

He could have certainly gotten it outside of his collection, although his collection was very large and as I was informed self collected. I have 4 more chunks of it and a couple small pieces. I am glad you are quick with the saw because I was very curious to see the inside and it is very cool. I was curious if it came from the same place that the thunder eggs came from...?

I found this blog (?) post: mineraalverzamelen.nl/conglomerate-thundereggs-from-road-to-opal-bed-richardsons-ranch/Two of those other Thundereggs I cut did have opal in them... That is what it is "a bunch of miniature thundereggs in matrix." That conglomerate is SO cool!

Here’s a Donnybrook. The multiple cores is consistent, but the matrix/phenocrysts are different Donnybrook Thunderegg by sdttds, on Flickr

Is all of the light colored area in the conglomerate rock sandstone? Rhyolite can be tan, and sandstone would make it something other than a Thunderegg.

Also, one nit-picky point. If the tan is not sandstone, and these are t-eggs, a better term is multi-egg or multi-cored egg.
Conglomerate is a sedimentary rock in which pebbles are encased in something like sandstone. In t-eggs, the matrix forms first, and gas bubbles are filled later.

I get that it wasn't a close match, but there aren't that many leads that I've found on the internet for "conglomerate" thundereggs - let alone those within the US, since these were supposed to have been self collected in the US from the old timer... Haha, yeah, it has been a while, that actually made me laugh out loud and get an odd look from Sarah. I am excited to see the lakers and those are from the old timers collection as well... he had some really good stuff and I hope they'll have me back next spring for more rummaging. Is all of the light colored area in the conglomerate rock sandstone? Rhyolite can be tan, and sandstone would make it something other than a Thunderegg. They really do appear to be thundereggs within that matrix area... I get what you're saying with regards to calling it a conglomerate. I do think it's interesting the "http://www.thundereggs.co.uk/" website - which seems to be one of the most comprehensive websites for thundereggs, calls these types of groupings as "conglomerates".
