Found this locally by the lake (fresh water). Any ideas? I've never found anything like this before. The rock is about 1 1/4 inches high

Ummm Well Garnet is my birthstone- and I'm a bit obsessed with the stuff (like everything else rock related) and so My sister has collected Garnet gniess and given it to me and it looks just like that- Yea Birthdays are easy for me- just hand me a bag of rocks- and I'm happy!

A Garnet? You serious? Here in Montreal?
Guess I'm used to seeing Garnets as a red piece of glass.
Won't tumble? Does it fall apart? Doesn't shape? Doesn't polish? I threw it into the tumbler yesterday to act as a filler in coarse. What should I expect?
Are you sure it's not GRANITE gneiss?

Well Granite and gniess are very similar in that the are both a combination of several minerals- Not to get to technical- the chunk you got is more than likley marble (the white) and Garnet (the reddish brown)- I t may take a shine- but I've never had luck with marble- Keep me posted as I have a good size chunk just like yours and I'm dyeing to try it!

I have to read up a little more about Gneiss'
Just got back from the other side of the lake. Got a few more interesting idontknowite's I'll post pictures later if I get the chance. I found few fossil ones, some quartz (the I-DO-knowites) and a couple that actually look like pieces of garnet fused into a rock... I'm not sure if they are Garnet, but maybe you'll be able to ID them.

Just keeping you upto date... I threw it in the barrel, and after 2 days the rock was shaped and ready for the next stage (SOFT!!!) Most of the little red-brown specks turned green. It'll be a little while before I put it in 120/220... maybe in a week or 2. I'll let you know how it takes it.

I don't know what it is, but I am sure I've got some rock that looks pretty much like it. Pretty sure mine did polish, but it was more like the lighter parts polished and the other part not so much.

yup, green... check it out After 2 days of coarse - Yes, it's the same rock as above What's really strange, is that there was no hint of green before I threw it in the barrel (scroll up to the "before" picture). __________________________________chassroc, I have no idea what it is, but it does seem like the green specks have oxidized at some point, leaving an interesting redish-brown speckled rock behind for me to find. I just had to go and ruin it by sticking it in the barrel I like it better with red specks. I'm wondering if it'll change color again after 120/220 Probably not, but you never know.

You know, garnets can be red or green, so it makes you wonder... This should be interesting!

I was just thinking that cookie, but I don't recall ever seeing garnets going in as red, and coming out green.
I think it's probably some other mineral with some metal deposits, which had oxidized.

well duh *steffy smacks head too hard and passes outttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt* Looks like the green is actually in the base rock and is being reflected in the garnets (pretty good trick) I am still thinking that the base is a marble (there are blue marbles in the North eastern USA) with garnet crystals- It is a cool rock Alice-
