I’ve resisted measuring, up to this point. I was marking girdles on a bunch of preforms last night. With 3mm being right at 1/8" and some of my slabs I am working with are under 1/4", I just couldn't keep the girdle at that 3mm mark...it made it seem like I would have hardly any dome height to work with...

I’ve resisted measuring, up to this point. I'm the same.
No measuring- of course, my cabs are for my use-wrapping- so I don't need to worry about making someone else happy!

Sometimes you just have to work with what you have. If your girdle is less than 3 mm, then so it goes. There are ways to work around it. Some people will but a backer inside a bezel cup to raise a stone up to fit. Some people sand the bezel down. It's not usually that big of a problem.

Yeah, sometimes that's a problem, especially with expensive material like dino bone, where dealers cut it very thin (I think I have some slabs that are only 4mm thick), in order to maximize the number of slabs they get*. Those are tricky. Ultra-low domes are challenging when it comes to not get flat spots on the top of the dome, and for removing all the scratches. And then I still have to keep the girdle even, and not break the cab. Those are the cabs where I really shouldn't drink espresso beforehand. * To be fair, I have some dino bone slabs that are about 1cm thick, but it's so crumbly, I think they had to cut it that thick to get the slab to stay together.

Thank you so very much! My dad was saying he wants me to make one of my cabs into a hat pin for him. He said he liked the shield shape. So, I was going to super glue two clutch pin backs to the back of this one and just give this one to him (he said he wanted that type of pin). It would be the first cab I've "let go"!

He's sure to love it. Although it' s hard to let go of our favorite creations it's good to see how much people enjoy them. My friends really seem to like the little specimens and palm stones I make. The palm stones help the guys at work when they get stressed. I mean.. no one was stressed this year were they 😄😄
