Both look great but that first one looks amazing! Very cool patterns and color!
And two out of five doesn’t sound too bad when you are working with such fragile material!

Very pretty! Can't decide which one I like better. Thanks Robin! It's like having more than one kid...you're not "supposed" to have a favorite...but... LOL Both look great but that first one looks amazing! Very cool patterns and color! And two out of five doesn’t sound too bad when you are working with such fragile material! Thanks Brian! I agree. To me, the patterning in that first one is "off the charts" beautiful in my eyes. I keep picking it up and looking at it. LOL

These are ridiculously sweet! Normally I'm a color person but that first one.....that's something else.

I don't see anything wrong with them. They are lovely. On my first look, I liked the second best. But like you say, no reason to have a favourite child or cab.

I'm not gonna lie...I about passed out from blood loss to my brain when I cut the slap this cab came from! I think I even uttered "Oh my God!" outloud when I saw the patterning going on. I got several slabs out of that rock and I've got several preforms that have similar patterning as this one, but this was one of the "best of the best" that came out of that rock. I don't see anything wrong with them. They are lovely. On my first look, I liked the second best. But like you say, no reason to have a favourite child or cab. Thanks Greig! I told my mom she could pick a cab out of the ones I've done so we could make a necklace out of it for her...it's going to take every ounce of strength NOT to hide these two when she's looking through all of them to choose one! LOL

These two are some pretty exceptional pieces of stone, Jason!
If there are any pits or imperfections in either of them then I am unable to see them. They are a really busy looking material and I don't think that the average customer could see them (or even mind) that they were there.
You got some pretty thick slabs there! I mean, almost 50% thicker than anything that I cut mine at.
Do you have a specific type of setting that you are going to drop these in to perhaps? Just curious if you had something in mind for them like Silver or something.

They're very minor...but I know they're there. The first one is 8.3mm thick and the second one is 8.7mm thick. I still don't have a good method down pat when I'm cutting slabs yet, so the slabs aren't all the "norm" of 1/4 inch (6.35mm). I know what I need to do to get them more uniformly thick, I just haven't done it yet. LOL I have no specific plans for what's going to happen to either of these cabs...or ANY cabs I've made so far! LOL - I'm just making cabs to make cabs for the time being and letting them accumulate all over the stereo and stereo cabinet!

Nice ones. Great work. I see a couple of contenders for the "wintery" contest.
Funny, one of my weekend cabs was Crazy Lace, and I also discovered some druzy pockets, in an area that looks like it has more, if I grind these down, so I'll leave the "features."
I look forward to seeing the other three.

The two Turritella Agates pitted out even further than I thought they were going to. The other one was a small piece of Unknown, possibly Black Canyon you had sent me. That one too ended up with minute pits all throughout the dome surface. I tried to use cyanoacrylate to fill in the holes, but I used the gel. The gel seemed really "rubbery" when I was trying to grind it off the surface. So don't know that it worked the way the liquid cyanoacrylate would have worked. I'll have to experiment again on some others maybe. I'll see about posting pics of them here maybe later tonight. I suppose that first one could have been a contender for the contest...I just didn't see that it was really...so I begged for a grab bag from Tommy. I just posted my contest entry earlier this afternoon.

I just posted my contest entry earlier this afternoon. I like them both. For stabilizing pits with CA, when I’ve done it, I really didn’t see much of a drawback from using the gel, as long as the stone was warm (not hot, though), to reduce the viscosity and let it penetrate. If you do that, it actually seems to cure harder, as long as you give it time (a few days, at least). I usually did it for a week. TBH, it was kind of by by default, though, since I’ve only ever had time on the weekends. Also, when I touched it up, I tried not to use rougher than 600 grit, and worked slowly, with a light ouch. Sometimes I got pretty good results, but it always bothered me... felt like cheating... so I rarely do it anymore. There are a few PJ and Dino bone cabs where I’ve been tempted to take another stab at it.

LOL I probably didn't let it cure long enough. It was "maybe" 24 hours...or thereabout. And I didn't heat the stone. I remember reading about that and apparently "conveniently" forgot about it because I was in a rush for no apparent reason other than not having a ton of patience! LOL I prefer to think of it as the amelioration of detritus rather than cheating! (It helps me sleep better at night! LOL)

People there were pretty much against unnatural modifications, including stabilizing and heat-treating. It sort of getting lumped in with dyeing and selling things under misleading trade names. Most of it was rooted in getting stuff from eBay that just wasn't what it claimed to be. Of course, if you're just cabbing for yourself, or fully disclosing on anything you sell, it is fine. The other part of it is just appreciating imperfection. Admittedly, that has limits.

Just saw this post, Jason- I think they're fantastic. I have a ton of cabs that I thought turned out great, until I decide to wrap them. Then I find pits. Or fractures. Or both. I'm not sure if there's ever "perfection". I guess the way I see things is to do what I can the best I can. They are rocks, after all... Anyway, I really do like these.

I have to say, there's no real feelings of "disappointment" from me about these two stones. I'm happy to have been involved with disclosing what nature took so long to produce! I keep the loupe on the kitchen counter...if I want to remain happy with A LOT of the cabs I've done, I leave the loupe right where it's at! LOL
