Those looks like some nice finds! I like the first two pictures of the dark and mysterious rock. The greenish gray one with the pinkish orange stripe (3rd from the bottom) also looks interesting. Then again, green stones always seem to catch my eye!

The same rock that stood out to Brian is the one that stood out me. There's just something about that one... If you do cut these open, I hope you can post some pics...now you've got me curious.

The green one in that last pic...I see a lot of material like that over here in SD. Usually it's a grey (off-white) rock with black versus the green. They always feel very sedimentary to me, so I've never brought one home...

Nice finds!
IDK what you have for a saw or if you've cut banded iron before but it makes a helluva mess. I'm talking it looks like a murder scene afterwards. Best to have that last in line
Also the specular (sparkly) hematite looses it's pizzazz when "polished", usually best left raw.

Haha, you are right, it does! I don't know if I have done anything with a sparkly one before to know if it fades away- thanks for the tip. Banded Iron big red mess and certain fossils have strong smells!

Nice collection of rocks!
Are these pics of rocks you found when things were thawed out or are you currently out there digging through the snow and ice?
What area of the state are you collecting these from?

Thanks, I think -well I hope- that things will look much better when cut or tumbled. Hard to show the potential my eyes are seeing.
Current findings, smack dab middle of the lower peninsula approximately.

That's a nice sized Puddingstone! Yes! I have found some of the larger ones that have a couple jasper spots with hopes of more on the interior. This was pretty peppered though! And a couple playmates decided to show up.

Some surely interesting mud finds. While Fairburns are my "first" love...they're not my "only" love! LOL I think a lot of it has to do with patterning for me. The Petoskey Stones have the geometric patterns to them, so they seem to really pique my interest visually. *In other words, I think they're "purdy"!

Im with you on the petoskey part! I got a couple large finds I'd love to try and polish. Sorta like the one in this thread, but even a little larger and less pits I think, could be stunning. Those Fairburns you guys find are pretty darn cool though, agates hide pretty well here then it's barely an agate or fossil related, cool still to find I can't imagine finding those ones out west.
