Once you dial it in, opal is pretty easy to make some great pieces. Once the main polishing process is behind you, the shaping gets second nature. I am cutting and polishing an opal for a custom ring I am making for a customer. Diamond laps really make the difference. I use cerium oxide for final polish. Yeah, boulder opal, with its ironstone matrix gets really messy. Lots of residue.
