My latest order from Gerdus has arrived! I took the day off and rented a truck. My son and I drove up to San Francisco to pickup the rocks - over 2,000 pounds of various goodies. I can already tell that tomorrow is going to be a motrin morning as I unloaded each piece by hand - with the help of my daughter and her little red wagon. I really need a forklift. Back in late May, I asked Gerdus about ordering more rock. He said that he would get back to me. Then, he changed his business model to be a broker rather than sell rough in bulk. After not hearing from Gerdus for a while, he sent me a list of what he had left. Needless to say, I snapped up what he had left! Here are a few pictures, there would be more pics and a more organized mess, but I had to return the rental truck, the kids had soccer practice and we got a new entertainment center and I had to re-hook up the stereo, dvd, tv and vcr. The first couple of pictures is the piles of rock sitting in my basement. This picture shows the Petalite, sodalite, tigerseye, swirlstone This picture is Quantum Quattro Silica, a rare mix of blue shattuckite, chrysocolla, green dioptase and malachite. In this picture, it is hard to see the detail. I'll try taking a more detailed picture. This is some very cool rock! The last two pictures are vogesite. The first is a closeup and the second is the small mountain. And, I still have two more bins of the vogesite in the garage to move.

Wow, very impressive! Some of those tiger eye and hawk eye chunks look to be amazingly thick. I look forward to seeing more pics!

That stuff is amazing, specially that Quantum Quattro Silica. But I have to ask: what are you planning on doing with all those rocks? I'm very partial to the tiger eye myself!

How do you stand it? I'd sleep in the garage every night just to be near it. The sodalite is amazing, as is the vogesite. Hell, it's all terrific. Over 2,000 pounds? You're killing me. matt

i think all of us are thinking this, so i guess i'll just ask. assuming you would even want to get rid of any of this: when you get time, it would be awesome if you put together a list of the rock and price per pound you would be willing to sell to us. but if you want to keep it all, thats perfectly understandable

Hi all,
Rollingstone - there is quite a variety of the tigereye, some is up to two inches think. The tigereye is the only one that I have sort through- Some is really thin (3/4 inch or so), some is quite think, there is a little bit of blue, some small chunks, some big chunks. There was also a couple of pieces of red, which I set aside for myself as my wife does not allow me into her new kitchen (except to do the dishes).
The sodalite was a bit of surprise - for those of you that have ordered from Gerdus know, the pieces tend be on the large size! The last order from Gerdus had 50 lbs of sodalite in four pieces. This order of sodalite has mostly fist size or smaller pieces with a few pieces a little bit bigger. But the color is a fantastic blue with a minimum of white quartz running through it.
What am I going to with this? Well, some is to tumble, some is going to be set aside, so that once I get a cabbing unit (thinking of the genie), I can cab some. The rest, well, I need to reduce the size of my rock museum (my wife's term). Let me get organized, and I will post some prices. No time today, as my parents had a party this afternoon, and I promised my little rockhound, who loaned me her wagon and helped unload the rock, I would take her to the rock shop. Hey fellow Central Cal rockers, my wife found a new rock shop in Capitola. The guy (Allen, I think), is a very nice guy, we got to talking, I told him about us and the website. And, also, about Miles Supply for grit. Hey Neph, this guy is into Jade. He said there is a Jade festival down by Gorda in October.
How many tumblers - 2 thumler B's and a Lortone 2-3 lbs. No way can I tumble all this in my lifetime, and what about all the other types of rocks out there!
Textiger, LOL I am very close to sleeping the garage. Luckily not from buying the rocks, but my little rockhound has been sneaking into our bed lately. Her excuse is that she is afraid of monsters- no more ScoobyDoo for her! Once into bed, she has this habit of moving around until she is perpendicular to us and pushing us out of the bed!
Neph- Thats a 24" saw I picked up in Sacramento. It is not up and running as something is wrong with the motor. I took the motor to the shop, I hope to hear the prognosis this week! When I bought it, the saw was being re-built until the guy lost interest. Besides getting the motor up and running, I needed to figure out the pulleys and how the belts are organized. Talk about luck, someone posted the same saw on Ebay. From the pictures, I can now tell which pulley goes where, and how the belts go! Next time you drive over the hill to Santa Cruz, give me a call, I am in Felton - only 15 minutes away!
Hi Rocky, Stoner is coming over tomorrow afternoon to drop off the drawers and doors for the vanity and the closet frame and doors, talk about perfect timing! I checked the barrels pretty closely, no black mambas LOL!
Pekesmoke, not sure why you see only one picture. Sorry to the folks on dialup, I should have reduced the pics more. I was a little excited and forgot!
Gaetz, LOL - BAM! Kick it up a notch - Emeril is one of my favorites on the food channel. Alton Brown is pretty funny too! This order went much smoother than the first order as I had a much better understanding of the process. I work in trucking and I thought I knew what to expect, but importing and customs is a whole new world!
