I got the tumbler I bid for on ebay today but can't use it. The barrel has a crack in the bottom. I knew it had some dents but when I was washing it up to load I found this. I'm so disappointed. Now I have to wait somemore. Anyone know the best place to buy a used 1.5 # barrel for a Lortone? There's bottles of grit and even some plastic filler. There was no coarse grit so I realized I couldn't have started it anywat but there was a bottle of this white stuff. Any idea what it is? It's like margarita salt (no I didn't taste it). I put a bit on my finger and found it crumbles to nothing so can't imagine what it would be used for. I was so excited .... Cher

cher find a piece of rubber that you can cut to fit the bottom of the barrel on the inside and get some shoe goop at the store and put a nice layer on the inside bottom of the barrel and then stick the rubber to it and let sit for a day or so an you can get alot more use outta that barrel

I wondered if I could just put a layer of silicon in the bottom. What kind of rubber? Like an old tire tube or would it have to be heavier?

How disappointing! I bet your fit to be tied, I would be I bet if you got a thick enough layer(s) of silicone on there it would hold you for a while. My heart hurts for you cookie

i sure hope you left BAD-BAD feedback to seller who sold cracked barrel. tell us who it was so we never buy from them.
have no clue what the crystalline stuff is.........locks lie salt, as you say, Cher.
don't give up, try the shoe goop, more than one way to skin a tumbler.
order 60/90 grit as hope for the future.

No, I'm going to leave good feedback for him. I sent him an email with a picture. He replied and apologized and is refunding me $14.00 on what I paid him. I do believe it was a total oversight. He probably picked it up somewhere just for an ebay thing and had never even opened the barrel. It still had moisture in it. Being he was so quick to reply and agreed to the amount, I am satified. $14.00 will just about buy me a new barrel. He already sent the $$ but to the wrong email address. I mean it's my email addy, but not my paypal addy. Cher

Just a thought rosebudmn - I often cut up car mats (the pure rubber ones which you'd place under the pedals) inside my barrels, they are extremely hard wearing. Anything you glue on the inside though can hold grit between stages if you use the same barrel for say a 80/220 tumble unless the underside is 100% sealed. Araldite is good for sealing up 100%. Best off with a new barrel though.....

Thanks Andy, that's definitely a good thought for replacement material. I think you're right about the new tumbler though. I had thought that I could use the smaller one for the last polishing stage so sure wouldn't want to have any coarse grit sticking in there.
You know, the crack is on the outside bottom, not all the way through. Would it work for me to put a nice smooth layer of silicon on there or perhaps some of that waterproof tub sealant?

use Shoo-goo you should be able to find it at Wal-Mart it is tougher than silicone. let it dry for a couple of days. put a layer on the inside and then roughen up the outside with some 80 grit sandpaper and put a layer on the outside. when that wears out do it again

Congratulations on getting your tumbler, pity the barrel is not up to the job just yet. But with the good advice above you will soon have it rolling.
Good luck

the white stuff looks like the type of detergent that is in flakes. I can't think what it is called. Also is the barrel rubber or metal? If it is metal go to a auto store and get some J.P weld or something similiar. That stuff holds great. If it is rubber silicone caulking on the outside should seal that crack. Good luck

Could that possibly be that *lol* muley borax soap? The barrel is rubber so I'll be using the shoo goo or silicone, whichever I find first.

They really don't have any smell and are kind of crystally crunchy. Like I said, they crumbled to dust when I squished them between my fingers.
