3,000 is OK. I bought a 14,000 and am loving it for the extra polish.

Definitely good first efforts. How are you dopping? Actual wax, or superglue?

I was told by an old cabber to Always take your stones to at least 12K. He said if your gonna practice- then practice polishing too! He taught me more about cabbing than any online site, book or human ever. He also taught me about 50K diamond paste and took my cabs from nice to WOWZER. Guy was truly an amazing lapadarist. Come to think of it he also turned me onto Tin Oxide polish for tumbling.

Definitely good first efforts. How are you dopping? Actual wax, or superglue? These were dopped with wax. The inland dopping station could not get wax hot enough even on the replacement unit. Ill try different methods before settling on one i like.

Ill try different methods before settling on one i like. I use the gorilla glue gel version of superglue on a nail or flat screw head, and let it cure for a few days (which is overkill, but what the hey, it gives me something to do fiddling with rocks on days where I don't actually have time to cab). I rarely have a problem unless the back of the stone is too smooth (in which case I rough it up first with a second or two on the 80 grit or a belt sander). Dop wax is pretty well known for failing in cold weather, but if I remember correctly, you are in FL, so that shouldn't be a problem. Weird that two units in a row couldn't get hot enough for you.

Yeah cold won't be my problem here in FL.. LOL I was surprised as well. I think it was an issue with the wax itself. The wax achieved the temp it is supposed to flow at (green wax) but only got to the consistency of play dough. The second unit I even added just a 1/4 stick andit did same. Last thing I did was put a stick in a melter that could reach 100Deg C and it did. Wax was same consistency. Now when I used it by heating the stone and wax with an alcohol burner it reacted as I had seen in other videos. Who knows. I am going to try a different brand of wax and see.

Sounds like a bad batch. It happens occasionally.
