So everyone went to the store and I thought I'd slab a rock...and this happened. Was it me or a defective blade, and has this happened to anyone else? Thanks.

Man that looks like a defective blade to me. Edge where the sintered diamond joins the core looks like there were problems with the interface. In many many years of sawing rocks I've never had that happen with a blade. However Diamond Pacific made a defective run of sintered diamond grinding wheels one time where the sintered diamond part just peeled off just the like edge of your blade did. This was due to water getting under the diamond section causing it to rust free. If you were using water coolant that could be the problem with your blade. The edge of the larger section that broke off does look a bit rusty in the pic.

It kept breaking tiles so maybe it was the blade... Last time I get one of those! 🙄

Scary! Blades shouldn’t do that. Glad you weren’t hurt.

Therefore - I bought a rock saw. i'm done with tile saws.

I had a rock take a bite out of a sintered lapidary blade in a lapidary saw awhile back, in my case I wandered away while it was cutting and my high maintennance slab saw stalled the blade, but the auto feed kept going and munched the blade. It bent the blade pretty severely before it snapped, doesn't look the same as yours. Other than a faulty blade, I suppose if you were using the side of the blade a lot to shape rocks it may have contributed to the failure.

Silly question, but does the blade have a specific direction it is supposed to rotate in?
(have seen some odd stuff happen in that regard)

I have used a tile saw for 15 years now and never have seen this kind of failure. I even had a chunk of lace agate break funny and pinch the saw blade between the table and the rock causing the saw to stall and pop a breaker, and the blade got a link in it but held. I took a hammer and work the blade back to true and use it for real soft rock (as I'm afraid hard stuff may split the blade like what happened to you lol). I would say that unless you were really horsing that blade that is defective defective defective.

Oh man! I'm so glad you are ok. That could have ended badly.
My son and I have used the skilsaw tile saw for a long time with various blades and rocks and have never had a problem. I'm thinking it was a bad blade, but who knows. I'm just glad no one got hurt.

Holy moley, Mike!
I'm so glad you didn't get hurt. If it was a new blade, it was defective. There's no way that should have happened. We don't have a tile saw, but I've never seen a blade do that.
