How's it tumblin?
I was wondering if anyone has ever tried putting whole dremel wheels or stones right in with the rocks being tumbled. I saw that the silicon carbide wheels that i have used for shaping rocks, were the same magic ingredient used in tumbling.
Am i seeing this the wrong way? Could it help take the edges off very jagged stones? Maybe some diamond bits... I would love to hear some thoughts.
I went ahead and threw some wheels in with some 4-day-rolling unidentified agate from the arkansas river(another thread maybe), just to do a little trial. Let me know what y'all think

In theory it will work for course,BUT not as quickly as the idea of grit is the rocks sliding over each other with lots of little pieces of abrasive rubbing against each rock. Make the abrasive too big and the grinding will slowly down very quickly. I'm guessing you added these to your normal for charge to hopefully speed things up, and that may work.

You are not getting any benefit from them. You want grit on everything rubbing and cutting. The items you tossed in are really just concentrating the grit in one place reducing the effectiveness. Another thing to consider is that is an expensive source of SC. For the price of a dremel stone I could put a cup of grit in most likely. Finally, you mentioned 4 day tumble of agate. My experience is rough tumble stage on agate is counted in weeks not days with a rotary.

Hey thanks for the replies! The agates have been in for four days but i will go longer. I have another batch done to compare. Some are pretty rolled from the river before i get them. I was thinking of buying larger grinding wheels from a discount store and smashing them, if they seemed to really help. I did add them to the normal grit. I notice my grit gets fine very quick, and thought maybe having large chunks rolling around with it would get to spots that get missed by grit or grind the edges quicker...

I was so sorry to see this person delete their account. This is the Private Message I received just a little while ago: You liked a comment that did not answer my question at all and sounded like he didn't even read it. Are you a troll or what? You just go around liking insulting irrelevant answers. I don't get it. You got a trolling ring on this website? Do you read what you like? I guess I shouldn't have "liked" standles post...

Wow! Someone has anger issues. I obviously did read the post as i specifically addressed his dremel wheel idea and 4 days on agates. Some people only ask questions as a ploy to show h0w smart they are then get mad when everyone doesn't immediately agree and start singing their praises. I work with alot of ppl like that. Oh well...

LOL Oddly, his reaction to this thread was all caught on film: Wow! Someone has anger issues. I obviously did read the post as i soecifically addressed his dremel wheel idea and 4 days on agates. Sometimes it's not "fair play" to have a battle of wits against an "unarmed" individual! LOL - I immediately thought of the following: Never mess with a Sicilian when death is on the line!!!

IDGAF either way but James Price made a career out of whacking old grinding wheels for the tumbler.

Crap, I forgot to mention the down side of using chunk abrasives like +/- 1 inch pieces of SiC 50 grinding wheels. Granted these particular ones shed SiC 50 in a time release fashion for 2-3 weeks but they also ate tumbler barrels. Cheaper AO grinding wheels don't do anything to agates and other Mohs 7 rocks because alum ox does not cut fast like SiC.
I want a cigarette so bad. Yes trying to quit.

Good for you! Success is all in the mindset. More positivity. You don't say you are trying to quit, you say you are quitting. Mrrockpicker quit cold turkey after many years of smoking. No nicoderm gum, patches or any other stop smoking aids. He never ever bought or smoked another cigarette. But says he will always crave a cigarette. He's been nicotine free for forty years now. Smoking is probably not frowned on as much in Georgia as it is in Cali. But quitting is better for your health, and those around you. There is one very final way to quit... Okay, I'll just stfu now and stop pontificating. Wishing you success with that, James!

Thanks rockpickerforever. I love smoking more than tumbling. Life is difficult at the moment. I do love breathing easy and smelling a lady from 4 miles.

Oh well bye bye deleted account lol I truly appreciate the kind words. If it would have been a long-time member who sent me the same type of message that "deleted" did, I would have had to take a hard look at what I had done to get an email like the one I did. However, knowing the reason "deleted" sent me the message was because I had "liked" someone's post in their thread, his message was like water off a duck's back to me. I just shared what he sent as more of a public service announcement than anything else. LOL The really sad thing about the whole issue, is that I really liked his question. I think without asking questions like this, people would always wonder. I knew JamesP had touched on a "similar" approach, so I didn't think his question was too off base. Too bad he didn't stick around to see his question would get answered...but instead he had to get his undies in a knot, throw a temper tantrum for no viable reason, and walked off! James, I've got positive vibes headed your way with what you're trying to deal with right now. You're one of the individuals I've seen on here who definitely has the mental fortitude to accomplish what you're wanting to accomplish. Hang in there...it will get easier.
