Is it bad when you open up your barrel & find this?

I hate that! It really sucks! For some reason, I never had this problem for my first year or so of tumbling and then started with it on a regular basis. Titanium seemed to be the worst for it. I try to polish everything in the vibe unless it is too big. Saves a lot of polish and aggravation.

I get that all that time No It's not bad.
Makes me wonder why I use filler at times because it's so thick

I usually get that with my tripoli and my cerium oxide polish. I have not had anything turn out bad, in fact the few times that I didn't have that foam my rocks didn't seem like they polished as nicely. Tami

Wow, that's different. I've never had that happen but looks like it would be a pain in the butt to find the pellets in that mess.

Cher, I don't bother taking the pellets out. I fish for rocks, and leave the rest in the barrel... Foam, polish, pellets and water. Rocks go to the bottom of the barrel, while the pellets float. It's really not that hard.
I have a separate barrel for polish only. so seeing that you can reuse polish, I just leave everything in the barrel.

Yeah, but while your fishing those rocks out, the foam and pellets are sticking to your hand and fingers and getting all over. Funny, everyone has their own little way to separate the pellets and rocks. I've got some 3 pound size margarine tubs that I put a strainer over. Dump the barrel into the strainer, rinse the barrel and dump that several times over the rocks/pellets in the strainer to rinse the polish off for reuse. The rocks/pellets go back in the barrel to wash and the polish is left to settle for so I can dump excess water off. I only do this for stuff I reuse like 500, 1000 and polish, the first two stages just get dumped.

I fish out with one hand. Grab the rock with the other hand, and place the rock down. Then I grab my "polish only" tooth brush and brush the pellets back down into the barrel.
When I'm dealing with pellets and slurry, I dump everything into a strainer. Rinse. pull out the rocks, and then let the pellets air dry in the strainer (can take a few days). Then off to a little baggie marked with whatever grit they came out of.

Tami, you get foam with tripoli? That is odd, I have never had any foam, in fact, its the opposite. Tripoli for me, just looks like thick, tan water after a week of tumbling.

my tripoli foams too. And often times, so do all other stages (usually the first 3 days of putting fresh grit in... but after 3 days or so, the foam goes away, and turns to mud / slurry)

i get foam with softer rocks, sodalite, obsidian, some jaspers. borax will help cut that down a bit. when ya get a rabid foaming barrel, you should check it often. otherwise...you could have a nasty surprise.
and Puppies is right, some polishes lean toward making more foam than others. but it's not unusual, LCARS.

Cool, I was wondering if I was going to have to take my tumbler in to get it a prescription for "Gas-ex" I'm not getting outgassing, just the foam so i'm not worried about the lid popping off.

Hey! After only a few hours of putting some borax in, my foam is nearly gone! I was using alox polish in that one. I switched my other barrel over to cerox & haven't had any foaming. I finally burned off the rest of that crappy alox polish I got in the Lortone kit & from now on I will use the bulk polish since it's a bit cheaper & actually works better.
I hope it's OK to have borax in the polishing stage?

I just don't worry about it, if it foams it foams. Tami

I've been using purified water, it's a bit softer and I add borax. Havent had to many problems with foaming. I did have that happen to a couple course barrels, I think I may have left some soap in there from when the cleaned the rocks before I started the barrel. Marian

I use Britta filtered tap water in my tumbler. We have pretty clean water right out of the tap here in the relatively unspoiled wilds of Vancouver Island but I only want the best for my rocks ;D
