I have a lortone rotary tumbler, is it normal for the bottom of the barrel to be caved in a little bit? I've been letting out the rock farts every 24 hours or so, on the first grit the barrel puffed out slightly on the bottom before I burped it. Now I'm doing the second grit and it looks like it's sucking in a little. I'm not sure if this is normal and I don't have time to read a book to learn so I'm doing it the hard way π

Both of the barrels on our 33B are concave. I like that knowing that if gas does build up it has at least a little room to expand.

I usually recommend customers put a rock about the size of a barrel nut under the bottom and push down to expel some atmosphere to start then if your barrel makes gas you can see it puff out and relieve the pressure before the lid pops off making a mess. I also do it so I don't have to open the lid once it starts rolling. that is a waste of my time. A slight dimple is ok.

We spent a whole year where at least one of our QT-66 barrels were roughing glass. This is the exact trick we used and it would buy us 2-3 days until we had to burp/check slurry/clean out. That was extremely gaseous stuff, tried to stick to the 2 day plan as by the third day it felt like she was gonna blow. All that time though not a single blowout. The glass were the only loads we ever intentionally did the dimple trick though it does happen on its own quite a bit, perfectly normal.

When you tighten the nut to seal the barrel It pulls the lid toward the nut to make the seal Which pulls the bottom of the barrel in with it

I guess you took a Voyage to the Land of Freeze-Dried Godzilla Farts
