I have some blue onyx that I am tumbling. Anytime I use AO, in the loto, with sugar, nice and thick. Or without sugar. The stones seem to tear at the fibers. Kind of how labradorite doesn’t tumble well. 500 SIC works fine and the stones smooth out They are soft and develop mud quickly, even with 1/8 tsp AO and round quartz. Any ideas for shine?

I tried 2/3 cushioning. Both ceramics and small round polished quartz

I found the plastic pellets (and the small rocks) for me worked better for the laboradite and the Sunstone I did.

My goto polish technique after fine grit it two weeks in cerium oxide followed by two weeks in tin oxide.

knave So you said blue onyx which is a hard stone. Onyx being chalcedony (SiO2). But they look like travertine. aka Mexican Onyx (CaCO3). It may be blue too. So if they are travertine then we need to reset to make sure we are now on the same page. If it is travertine then the hardness is 3 and it is soft. Ceramics are H=6 (the major component is Orthoclase). That means you need to tumble them like you would tumble petoskey stone. No quartz, no ceramics. They are too hard and are scratching the "onyx" and killing the polish.

Question: when the walnut is used, is the water added as usual? (fill with water & dump out?) Or is the walnut the carrier INSTEAD of the water? Just curious. Thanks.

Yep, that stuff is Calcite, if you can find a way to polish it I am listening, I have a pile of it in my garden slowly vanishing underground as the worms do their thing.
