hypodactylus absolutely feel in love Utah, had my spinning my head when I went thru on a trip years back. I know there is land to be had everywhere and I would love to explore it Rockoonz Thanks for the feedback, I was looking at the Kennewick area as a possibility. If I did that OR/CA border it would likely be near Mt. Shasta or on the coast in one of those smaller towns. Really enjoyed the Flagstaff area when I rolled thru there years ago, wish I could have seen more. At the time I didn't even know AZ had mountains! The Tri Cities area, Pasco, Kennewick, and the other one, are a nice scenic area with a good rock club, good base for travel. Unfortunately they have had an ongoing competition with Cowlitz county, where I grew up, for Meth capitol of WA state. Entirely different breed of rocks.

That an interesting set of circumstances, Chad Being a loose rock and willing to go for it
What line of work of your interested in? Kind of sounds like your willing to labor to just get established?
Small populated places- the career path is slim Unless you have that unique set of skills or get a job offer.
I mean... no one would live in Phoenix if job opportunities were plentiful up north ha

you would need to love wildfire to live there. 😁 (oops, over-edited — talking about NorCal/Oregon border area). Seriously, though, the Humboldt coast is gorgeous, and so is Mendocino. Both have plenty of interesting rocks, but few jobs outside of, um, pharming. Right on the coast, there’s moisture, and it’s cool, but it gets HOT and dry quickly as you move inland. As for the “mass exodus” from California — it’s mainly political ads. True, some people are moving out, but some are also moving in. When I take my hazmat training classes, the instructor always talks about the strict rules in California, and then says, “it could be worse, though — you could live in Texas.” In the next breath, he tells us that he tells his Texas classes, “it could be worse, though — you could live in California.” He is from New Jersey. The point is, there’s stuff to love and hate about every place, so you have to figure out your own priorities and go with as many of those as you can get in one place. Most people will never get them all. And then you have to accept the pros and cons. One thing I’ve learned that most people who look at the geographical cure to solve their problems take their misery with them. People who are basically happy, take their happiness with them. (Not calling you old, btw)

I don't know if you had considered it, but stay away from the Tidewater/Hampton Roads area. It's a mini NYC with a massive population ... and spreading. Very few land opportunities. Lots of jobs, though.

Have you considered going international? I spent some years in the Patagonia and loved it.

RWA3006 I have thought about it. I almost pulled the trigger on teaching english overseas in Korea and would love to check out numerous places. There is so much world to see and so little time.

Anyone been to Missoula? I checked and the temps are very similar to here, just half the precipitation...interesting.

It's been a kind of a strange few months. I've had a little bit of health mishaps, some irregular heartbeat and anxiety stuff out of nowhere. Reminded me of my panic attack like 20 years ago, but I think that was part of making the big decision that I'm alluding to.
I've decided to move to the south Seattle area around the beginning of June. I met someone from that area and now that I've spent the better part of a week in there (and with her) along with nearly a year long communication, I feel reasonably comfortable in the making the move.
Reasonably because, it does in a way, seem counter-intuitive to this thread about me wanting to move to the boonies. I like the area and on the surface the culture and atmosphere doesn't seem as bad as I had perceived it to be, there is definitely some strange characters, but it doesn't seem to out of the ordinary tbh.
The employer that I work for is a nation wide company so the plan is to transfer out and make a smooth transition to a new, similar role in the area. So between moving, finding a place, finding a "new" job, it had been slowly building up some extra anxiety. There was a waiting period where I had to make sure a few things fell in line before I fully commited.
Anyway, I just wanted to share with you guys, it's kinda half friends/family on here, so didn't see any reason to hold back anymore. I'm a little superstitious about jinxing these kinds of things, so I didn't want to get to far ahead of myself until I was confident in what was really happening, less drama ya know?

Congratulations Son Of Beach on finding love and building the courage to go through with the move. I found myself in similar shoes a few years ago. I'll spare you the details but I quit my job of 30 years and moved west from WI to MN to spend the rest of my life with MsAli. It can be stressful but I've always believed when one door closes another opens. Few people have the wherewithal to go through with such a move and I commend you for doing it. Enjoy the journey, there's loads of fun ahead 🥰

Some times life throws some home runs!
Change can be scary but what's scarier to me is staying in the comfort zone to feel safe and not doing anything
Enjoy the journey ❤️

Son Of Beach - Chad, I really can't express adequately how happy I am for you...for multiple reasons! I do believe this is going to work out exactly the way it's supposed to work out!

I am excited for a variety of reasons and as MsAli mentioned, to break out of the comfort zone.
A few BIG details to figure out, but the rest is no big deal

I did kind of scout out Klamath Falls, John Day and Kennewick. Things just didn't pan out that way.
I'm planning some road trips all around however...

Depends on what you want for work. Redmond, which is central Oregon, would probably suit your needs.

Well, I’m definitely too late to this thread to be helpful.
Having lived in NM, I was gonna warn of the fires. Shuts down a lot of viable rock hunting area. I’m in a small-ish town between Cleveland and Toledo Ohio. It’s a very summer town. Quiet in winter and busy in the summer. So that’s a consideration too…
Sounds exciting though! I love the Washington/Oregon area. I hope everything works out as you planned! Wishing you all the best!
