Agates are easy to polish but very hard material to shape. Not a bad first choice.

I did it! I have a dremel with a flex shaft and some bits (I think I need better ones) and I've been practicing grinding! I'm running agates and they have a LOT of holes, from tiny pinholes to very deep pits filled with geode crystals (they look like tiny caves). I don’t expect them to be perfectly smooth with the dremel, just want to give them a better run thru the grit. Are agates a bad choice for a beginning grinder? I read elsewhere on the forum that some people just fill the holes? There are 1001 types of agates. Some are easy to tumble. Others very difficult. Agates are hard, so it takes a long time to wear down imperfections. But with patience, they are one of the easier stones to tumble in terms of getting a good shine. As for grinding tumbles to remove flaws, get a tile saw and a tuck point blade. I own every tool mentioned in this thread, and that is by far the best bang for your buck if you want to quickly pre-grind a bunch of tumbles.
