I use 60/80 for stage 1 because I've read that 46/70 is hard on the barrels (and I don't mind the wait) That said, I'm not sure how the wear rate shakes out. If you only need 1 round of 46/70 and then ready for 220, would it cause equal wear to 3 rounds of 60/80?
To be honest, as soon as I saw the wear on barrels being a thing, I sort of abandoned the idea, but it sounds like there's no discernable difference between coarse & extra coarse after a day anyways.
Bummer!

I saw a huge difference when I started even doing 50% of the 46/70 - so much so , I'll never go back to just 60/90. I'm mainly just experimenting with mixing the two vs just 46/70. My tumbler does definitely get rocks ready quicker now - I have more and more rocks waiting for their turn in the vibe. It's a good problem to have, I guess! =). I bet it is harder on the barrel, unless it breaks down to 60/90 rather quickly like Bob said. I had to replace my rubber lid liner after six months (before I started using the 46/70); so it may be that I am hard on the barrel. I'm sure there are a lot of other factors involved, too - like how large your tumbler is, maybe even RPM. It is a lot of fun experimenting, though!
