Anyway...I need a new blade and I need to figure out a better method for shaping the preforms... Yeah, it's called a Genie. ![](https://media1.giphy.com/media/fXEhRluF0JYNzXigGO/giphy-downsized-large.gif)

I swear, I NEVER saw that in the picture! I saw that light colored mark and thought it was "mud" on the blade...but I never saw that damage! I posted pics on my phone with Tapatalk, but it really shows up on the computer! Holy crap, Rich! Why didn't you say something two days ago! LOL (Kidding!) That means I was running that thing for hours this morning with that damage! Good gawd I feel like an absolute idiot!

Meanwhile, on the other side of the blade, I thought this looked kinda odd . . . ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20211119/891ea67e1be0bebafdab7051b6a0c518.jpg)

It was in the mid-30s this morning when I was out doing this...I was in a hurry. LOL

Jason, all I can say is you must have had an angel on your shoulder. You could have been seriously injured.

Jason, all I can say is you must have had an angel on your shoulder. You could have been seriously injured. That truly hasn't escaped me Tela... I remember when miket had a blade come apart on him awhile back...but his was an instantaneous failure. Mine was something that happened over time...a failure I should have noticed...something of which I should have caught a LONG time ago. So I accept full responsibility for my failure in paying close enough attention.

jasoninsd It looks like there is a pretty long crack North East of the hole in the blade in the second photo. That’s kind of scary. I think I might start wearing my face shield when sawing. I probably should while cabbing too. I’ve seen photos of the aftermath of carborundum wheels breaking. It’s not pretty. I’m glad you stopped when you noticed something was wonky. Sincerely Brent

I am so glad you are ok and did not get hurt. I can just hear my father in the background saying to me "thats not what that tool is designed for" He taught cable school for the phone company and was always on me for using the wrong tool for a job. I did not always listen but I still have all 10 fingers.

Lucky or good? Hmm, I'll take a generous helping of each, please! EDIT to add - glad that you survived unscathed jasoninsd. We've all (at least I know I have!) done something that we didn't realize until afterwards what a dangerous position we had put ourselves into. Sometimes, it's due to just not thinking it through, other times, it may be a matter of cutting corners, trying to save some money. I am guilty of both.

I've also had that happen to me on a trim saw blade and I've had many blades fly apart on disc grinders and chain saw sharpeners. Eye protection is a major issue when there are pieces flying around but they usually only draw a little blood on flesh.
Vastly greater danger is with heavy SiC wheels flying apart. My buddy HAD a pal in college who stood in front of a bench grinder when he turned it on. An 8" wheel flew apart and a chunk hit him in the head and killed him right there.

I have a scar on my jawbone from a piece of Aluminum oxide wheel from a grinder that overheated the wheel after I removed the guards and built a guide to shave down a rubber profile at work. a larger piece a few inches up could have been a lot worse.

Yeah, it's called a Genie. Yeah, Rich. Also called 6 months or more of groceries for your family to pay for it if you don't accidently trip over one in an estate. I will say it's the cost that's keeping me from pulling the trigger on anything. Of course, if I started trying to sell some of my wraps, I could start putting money aside towards getting one. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Only 1200 cabs? I’d take that thing back to the hardware store to demand a replacement! I know right?!? Cheap piece of junk! LOL - I am surprised I got as much use out of this blade as I did... jasoninsd It looks like there is a pretty long crack North East of the hole in the blade in the second photo. I’m glad you stopped when you noticed something was wonky. Sincerely Brent Thanks Brent! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) I saw that crack too. My wife was giving me the third degree about checking my equipment each time I use it. I know she yells at me because she cares! (Kidding...she doesn't yell at me. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) ) I'm actually embarrassed to admit that I actually DIDN'T stop when I felt something wrong. I thought the wonkyness in the blade was maybe because I tweaked it shaping cabs...which didn't make sense really. Anyway, another "close-call lesson" that will be heeded in future cutting. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) I am so glad you are ok and did not get hurt. LOL Hmmm...I think both our dads were from the same "old school" generation! LOL - I heard the same thing...more than once! LOL - What do you mean a Crescent Wrench can't be used as a hammer? It's the tool in my hand at the moment, it must be! LOL I have had something like that happen to me before as well,I can't remember when but I posted about it. Kind of scary, glad you're ok my friend! Yeah, I mentioned that to Tela earlier in the thread. I said the difference was, yours was a manufacturer issue that was an instantaneous failure, mine occurred over a lot of time...and is something I should have noticed! ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Lucky or good? Well...I figure I was lucky this time...and maybe if I actually choose to learn from this fiasco, it'll help me towards being "good"! ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Thanks Jean...this was totally my fault for not paying attention close enough. I wasn't cutting corners, I was cutting rocks! Sheesh! - LOL I've also had that happen to me on a trim saw blade and I've had many blades fly apart on disc grinders and chain saw sharpeners. I have to keep a couple shop paper towels in my pocket to wipe the water off the glasses every couple minutes! LOL I'm sorry about your buddy's friend. I think I was "lucky" this blade didn't explode on me...I think "good" would've have been me recognizing there was an issue long before it got to this point. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Hey jasoninsd . I know you’re considering a cabbing unit. Something to consider is the distance between wheels. I’ve got the 8v1. I still find myself accidentally touching the previous wheel on larger cabs. In my opinion, it’s worth saving the money for the 8” unit based on that alone. When you’re looking at specs on these machines, take that into account. It’s much more important than you would think. There have been a couple instances when I made purchasing mistakes on Lapidary equipment. I guess I’m recommending saving a few more months to get the 8” unit. The 8v1 is huge. It takes up a big space in my rock workshop. On the upside, it’s size will easily allow two people to work at the same time and as I said, the distance between wheels sure makes life easier. You seem to be into it for the long haul. I’ll try to give you a call in the next few days to talk. My biggest lapidary mistakes have been going cheap on equipment. I’m a slow learner. That’s why I want to pass on my mistakes to you. Hopefully it will help. PS. The 8” saw blade as on option works really well. Sincerely, your friend Brent.

I feel very scatter-brained this week. Now that you mention it, I actually remember you telling me about the 8" having more room between the wheels. I'd love to chat with you again when you have the time. I'm not going anywhere until Thursday. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

Yes, jasoninsd, having that extra space between the 8" wheels would be a very good thing. As said previously, well worth the extra expense.
Wider wheels are good, too. I have an old Max-Pro 8 arbor with 2" wide 60 and 80 grit wheels. It's the go-to for roughing out large preforms.
