I was cleaning out some files and found a folder of pictures of Ocean Jasper. I took these for Susanne Lomatch, who is studying OJ and wrote a book on it. I have a lot of smaller slabs that I may cut, but these are large and will probably not be cut. I want to cry when I think of the ones that I did cut. So, if it love OJ like I do, enjoy! Sometimes, I enjoy just pulling them out and admiring them. Did I mention I like OJ- a lot?
Add your own pictures if you want to.

I do like OJ, I don’t like not having any lol! I'm watching an auction now for a so so slab. I expect it to be close to 175 if not more. I won't be buying more- not unless I fall into a good deal.

I have sold some that I never should have sold and it was almost criminal to cut a few.

I've cut some OJ from time to time, and I have 3 large slabs in the top drawer of my "too pretty to cut" flat file. I'll take pictures of them tomorrow and add them here.
I like OJ, but when you were buying up OJ, I was buying up Morrisonite and Carrasite.

I like Carrasite a lot, and I've had some nice Morrisonite, but I don't see any anymore that I'd want. That, too, is getting harder to get. Carrasite you can still find pretty easy. I had some pink one time that was really, really nice.

I can't say it any better than jadedvision or Lumberlegs put it! LOL I would love to stumble upon a few pieces that were "mismarked"...but I am in amazement at the prices these slabs bring in! You might have your retirement funds sitting right there in that file Tela! LOL I love them all, but that "starburst" (three up from the bottom) is really extra special...in my eyes. Great thread Tela - thanks for posting the eye candy!

The auction I was watching closed at 227.50. Wow! It wasn't even that nice.
Thanks, jasoninsd. I tell my husband about my "retirement fund". He doesn't believe me. LOL! I have a lot of stuff put away. My kids are like- you're gonna label all that for us, right?

They all take an interest in my rocks. They can name most materials in slab and cab. My son does lapidary and my grandson is going off to college into a rock related science (not sure which, yet) So they want me to name and categorize everything, but really, I think they'd do pretty well on their own. Except for value. That they don't really know. Who knows what it would be worth in say 20 years? Hell, all my good stuff I got before the prices skyrocketed. Have you seen good rhodochrosite prices? I did a BIN on a translucent bacon piece- really red as they call it- I say hot pink. It was small, but I paid 40 and thought myself lucky. He had another one up that went to auction and closed at 72. I debated on doing the BIN when I could have, but my slab was nicer and I have a lot. (I love rhodo, too.)
Yeah, I've seen some high prices on OJ, too. Every once in a while, I'll see some real small pieces for a cab or two that look really good and I'll snatch them up for cheap. A couple of my best OJ cabs were from slabettes.
I told DH that if RTH is around and I'm still there when I die, then sell the slabs, at auction, there- with Tommy's help, I hope.

Those are some great slabs. I had no idea these had increased in value so much. My wife and I meet Paul Obeniche in Tucson the second year he brought in Ocean Jasper. She purchased several spheres and chunks and I got a large set of bookends about 15lbs. We did ok on price because she speaks a little French and loves agates. Several years we were shown some very similar material in the Rainforest Jasper mine in Queensland AU. Rainforest Jasper Mine Queensland operated by Aradon.

I've been focusing on purchasing rough ever since I started. And I realize that I have been purchasing "bulk" purchases...and sometimes they're full of just "ok" material. However, once in awhile I'll get some really decent pieces out of the big (quantity) purchases. I've just now started looking at slabs themselves...rather than rough that I have to cut. I have to start selling some of my stuff so that I can better understand cost versus value in some products. At this point I don't know if buying a $40 slab would pay off for me... There sure has been a lot of talk about "what's next" here this last week on the forum...it's making me nervous.

Here are the few OJ slabs I am hoarding:
This one we bought at the Sedona show about 3 years ago. It's a nice, thick slab that can be split but the patterns aren't as good as the others. We only paid $32 for it.

I've got a fair amount of this but it is pretty much the consistently green variety. Somewhat neat if not monotonous, this stuff looks beautiful!

When I joined here I remember you posting OJ cabs and bemoaning the fact that there wasn't any good material left to be had, especially at a decent price. Being new to the hobby I didn't fully understand what you meant as it seemed like there was plenty out there and it looked so cool. Well after getting some experience under our belts I know exactly what you mean.
ETA: A couple of years ago I thought I had scored a killer slab on ebay- lots of colors, orbs, druzy, etc. Was so excited until I got it and it became clear that the seller had highly edited the photos.

Nice!!! Believe it or not- I think I like the green one best. Thanks for sharing!

I have no choice but to buy slabs and they average abt 40, like you said. Of course, I look for the bargains.
My big 6-0 is coming up and since there have been a few deaths in the family recently, I'm feeling very mortal.

The only piece I have. It’s not the best but it’s pretty large. The yellow stuff is pretty crumbly.
