I came home from work Wednesday night, and was surprised to have the house and cats to myself for the weekend. Of course, my wife took the only car we own without first notifying/consulting me, which is typical for her. Today, in keeping with my observation of Buy Nothing Day, I decided to hit the only hounding site I know of that is within bicycling distance: Cache Creek. This is the place where I'd previously found one of my favorite stones ever: a brecciated jasper, full of tiny bubbles orbs. It has yielded a few cabs, like this one: IMG_7158_Micro-orbicular, brecciated Cache Creek jasper cabochon by Stephan T., on Flickr I was hoping that some of the recent rains would have helped uncover some material, but the creek is still choked with weeds, and three feet wide and six inches deep in the good spots ( jasoninsd bring your raft, and we'll have a blast). There should be plenty of raccoons). Most of the rocks are still covered with a nice coating of dried algae, so even those that aren't UGRs tend to look like them. I did find about 20 interesting ones, and used some of the available creek water to evaluate and high grade. Most ended up been very fractured (not surprising with Coast Range material), but I did end up with seven that looked liked reasonable cutters (remember, I'm transporting by bike, and my wife already thinks I have too many rocks). They are soaking in hot, soapy water and getting periodic scrubs to remove algae. I'll post pics tomorrow. Even if these turn out to be complete crap, it felt SOOO good to get out and think about something other than managing the pandemic at work -- even if I was bushwhacking through 8-foot tall, dry weeds and overgrown cottonwoods. Hoping for a few good storms to wash that stuff out. The creek has a "wild and scenic" designation, so the nearest dam is nearly 100 miles upstream, so with a good rainfall, this puppy can rip and clear that stuff out.

I'm glad you were able to get some time to go out and weedwhack hound! If I were there I would have been more than happy to come out there with you and let you drag my raft...because as we all know, it apparently wasn't meant to be used as a floating device...but rather a rock-sled! LOL I can't wait to see what the cleaning is going to divulge!

I’d blend in perfectly with the local homeless folks who build some amazing contraptions to tow. And I could probably tow a few hundred pounds and test the integrity of my hernia patch.

Boy, you'd think with the amount of fires y'all have had out there, the fire would have done the courtesy of burning off the overgrowth in the areas YOU'D like for it to do so!

Now if I can just get Q to make some modifications to deal with the people who try to run me off the road, it looks perfect. None of the fires were close enough to deal with that vegetation. And, for some reason, if you try to do your own controlled burn, people get upset.

Here they are: The red and green streaks make the yellow jaser a little more interesting: DSC_0933_Brecciated jasper by Stephan T., on Flickr My favorite. It reminds me of Black Butte/Burris Creek material, which makes sense, since it would have formed in the same vicinity. One plus -- the yellow seems less punky than BB material: DSC_0927_My favorite brecciated jasper of the day by Stephan T., on Flickr I'm usually not a big fan of the local roast beef jasper, but this one looks like it might actually take a polish, plus the patterns are interesting, and there are colors other than just red and white: DSC_0926_"Roast beef" brecciated jasper by Stephan T., on Flickr After washing, the black looks like it's mostly surface oxidation. Oh, well: DSC_0923_Yellow and black jasper by Stephan T., on Flickr Another favorite, with popping colors and possible orbs: DSC_0921_Very cool brecciated jasper w/ possible orbs by Stephan T., on Flickr A nice hunk of poppy jasper: DSC_0919_Poppy jasper by Stephan T., on Flickr Might make a nice cab or two, if I frame that agate seam properly: DSC_0918_Yellow jasper with a nice agate seam by Stephan T., on Flickr Enjoy!

That's awesome stephan - glad you got out there and found some rocks. I was looking at your finds and thinking they look like they came from the same source as the Stoney Creek/Black Butte stuff and so I pulled up the map and ... well I'll be damned ... they did haha They just had to travel a bit farther.

Yup, as the crow flies, Clear Lake and Black Butte Lake are pretty close to each other

Yup, as the crow flies, Clear Lake and Black Butte Lake are pretty close to each other Eva and I have ran around and even car camped up on Goat Mountain, but the one thing we talked about doing and never got around to was to work our way around the north side of Indian Valley reservoir and find the north fork of Cache Creek that runs along the southern flanks of Goat Mountain. I still have a hunch that there might be some pretty good rocks in that area. I think a person would have to have an ATV to get up to the best parts of the creek though.

Always wanted to check out Goat Mt, but don’t have the proper kind of wheels. A Prius probably doesn’t have the proper clearance, plus 4wd would probably be needed (or, at least, beneficial).
