I decided to cab this piece of pet wood and thought this was kind of cool...when it's wet it looks fractured on the bottom left, but when it's dry you can see it's healed. I am curious to see how it looks once I polish it.

I like! Love the little pocket of agate at the bottom.

That's a pretty cool effect with that cracked opening...which isn't!

That's going to be an awesome cab when it's polished, miket! The agate pocket looks 3D in the wet picture.

Did you grind the preform down or did you cut it? I am often tempted to grind little rocks into preforms, except it takes forever and I have a hard time getting even thickness.
I look forward to seeing the end result.

I look forward to seeing the end result. I completely shaped and ground it down with a dremel- not sure I got the back completely flat but it's close. It wasn't too bad, maybe a half hour or so.

That's right, I forgot that you use a dremel. Can you point in the direction of a previous thread where you might have shown photos of the grinding wheels / points that you use on the dremel? I've been wanting to work my dremel into my cabbing process, but I'm not sure what to use.
Thanks!

Interesting, Tela! That would probably take more patience- and imagination- than I possess, though!

Don't think you can't do it. You can do it. Get a soft rock, carve some lines and then cab it. I would suggest any they used and also angelite, which is pretty cheap.

That would probably take more patience- and imagination- than I possess, though! I love projects like this - just pickup a rock and start grinding on it with no real slabbing in between. Mike, the reality is with your mastery of the Dremel you are probably way ahead of the rest of us in terms of being ready to transition into carving.
