These made me think of Bob Ross paintings for some reason...simple and beautiful. Happy little rocks you might say.

Thanks LL! I had to read what you wrote to my wife. She had decided to try her hand at painting, so she recorded 20+ episodes of The Joy of Painting not that long ago...and watched most of them! So, yes, I can see exactly what you're saying...and I hear "his" voice very clearly!

I wasn't sure how it was going to look or work when I was slabbing it. Interesting though...I just looked at the pics again, and saw that blemish on the bottom right of the third one. I have no idea how that happened. I'm positive these were flaw-free (it sounds arrogant to say "flawless"! LOL) when I had finished them...

I love being able to cab the material I find locally. Heck, the hounding grounds are only 20 minutes from the end of my driveway. It depends on the day...and depends on the material. Today I only did these four...but I was messing around with a lot of other stuff today. Other days I've done 13...but it was a long day. LOL

All of the good ones are t anywhere near me. I still haven't worked more than one in a "batch" at home. Something always happens to the ones after number one. Dang thirteen? Impressive. Four is nice too. I would love to have collecting locations closer to me. There's this place called "Deep Creek" really close that is supposed to have pastelite (no idea on the spelling) but we couldn't find the main hounding spot.

Yeah...I'm very lucky with regards to the hounding grounds. Railroad Buttes is 20 minutes away. Fairburn is about an hour. And Teepee Canyon is about an hour and a half...or so. I've got the Badlands 30 miles to the east of me, and the Black Hills 30 miles to the West...I can see them both from up at my mailbox. I have a correction. It was Tela who did 13 in a day, I did 11...but I knew I was close to Tela! LOL It took me two trips out to Teepee Canyon to find the right spot...I had no idea where it really was. I was darn close the first time I went...but not quite in the right spot. LOL

You always do those prairie agates proud. I can see the similarity to Ohio flint.
I feel silly trying to ID your SD rocks, but the last two (last three counting the rough) are so-called bubble-gum agates, right? I got a few handfuls off ebay a while ago -- all about golf ball size or a little smaller. They look boring in rough form, but if you cut or tumble them, you get all sorts of cool orbs, bands, and even some lacy patterns now and again. Much more agate-like than the prairie agates.

Thanks Jonathan! I wouldn't classify that one as a bubble gum agate...but maybe I'm wrong. I have a bunch of Bubble Gum Agates - they're found quite frequently out at Railroad Buttes. This material is definitely softer than what I know as BGA. Best way I can describe BGAs is they're made up of a group of nodules. When they're tumbled, the nodules wear down and create the orbs. With this material, the orbs are different than that...it's like they're just a part of the main rock. Again, maybe I'm way off...but just the density being so different is what makes me think these are not actually Bubble Gum Agates...

I agree that the piece of rough doesn't look like a bubblegum agate, but some of my tumbles look a whole lot like your cabs. IF they are solid enough, you should try slicing up and cabbing a few bubblegum agates. I imagine you've got at least a few big enough to cut.

The thing I've run across with the Bubble Gum Agates, when I've had access to the interior, is the interior isn't "solid" per se. I've got some broken ones somewhere. I'll try to find them and get some pics tomorrow. They can be over-tumbled where you lose the orbs and eyes. That's why I was saying they're more like a conglomeration of agate nodules held together by a softer white material that makes up the interior. At least that's been my impression of them...but remember, I'm not a geologist and I'm a relative "newbie" when it comes to rocks! So I'm describing things as best I can in layman terms! LOL
