Saturday morning cabs. Biggs Jasper (white spots are dust). I am experimenting with pattern orientation. It's not very scenic when cut like this, but still pretty cool. Amethyst Sage with no Amethyst = Sage Agate. Wildflower (Orbicular) Rhyolite from Mexico. And another... A wildflower bouquet. Brecciated Jasper from South Africa

Another batch of really great material. I especially like the Wildflower (Orbicular) Rhyolite. It looks like that Brecciated Jasper has some interesting things going on under the surface...

That Biggs is the bomb!! I don't think it has to scenic to be awesome.
I'm REALLY liking that Wildflower Rhyolite. Very nice.

I'm REALLY liking that Wildflower Rhyolite. Very nice. The rhyolite doesn't polish perfectly or consistently, but I think it looks good anyways. Not all cabs need a mirror polish.

Beautiful stones, holajonathan! That Biggs is seriously gorgeous. Tela's right -- it doesn't need a scene to be awesome. Actually, there is a lot of Biggs that isn't scenic. Yours looks like Blue Biggs to me.

Yours looks like Blue Biggs to me. Someone told me these colors and patterns are "Blue Deschutes" and not "Blue Biggs." From what I can gather, "Blue Biggs" may or may not actually have blue in it... and "regular" old dig Biggs can have blue, and so can Deschutes. You may be right, but I've given up on trying to distinguish among the Biggs area jaspers.

hummingbirdstones Ok, Robin, now you've got me headed back down the rabbit hole that I promised to avoid. I think this is "Blue Biggs" And I think this is Deschutes with some blue. The blue is subtle and doesn't show up well until polished. And I think this is "regular" Biggs with some grayish-blue tones And then there's plain brown Biggs, with no blues... And so-called Rufus Picture Jasper Beers Mountain picture jasper And China Hollow mine jasper and "Biggs opal" And this one with a thick metallic crust I have little confidence in my labels for any of these.

I found a few more examples... Blue Biggs on the left, and Duschuttes on the right. Maybe.

hummingbirdstones rockjunquieWhat's confusing is that Deschutes can be very blue, but location makes it Deschutes, as well as the pattern. A lot of Blue Biggs is not very blue, but it has the nice, really wavy tan tones, that are not usually present in Deschutes. What makes the whole thing especially confusing is that there seems to be quite a but of variability from all of the old dig sites. The more I look at them, I think the piece on the bottom and the small piece on the right are very blue Deschutes, not Blue Biggs. I think the other piece is Blue Biggs, even though it's not very blue.

That is, trying to learn to accurately ID the different types of Biggs. I'm not sure why I care so much. A personality flaw, I suppose.
