This material came from brybry . Thanks Bry! Pics 1-4: Unknown. This was collected by Bry in Georgia. It shined up better than I was hoping. Pics 5-7: Serpentine. I think this was correctly ID'd as Serpentine by AzRockGeek . After working it, and seeing the surface finish, I'm pretty positive this is Serpentine. Pics 8-10: Dumortierite. My wife claimed the first one. Finally, she picked something I made! LOL Pics 11-13: Seiber Agate. For those of you who don't know what this is, it's a vitreous byproduct of copper smelting. You can see the air bubbles that were in the slag, but I think this material is WELL worth it! Thanks for taking a gander. jasoninsd great job on finishing those materials! That slag looks a lot like paint (or frosting)! I really like that shield shape too. Do you have any tips on making those templates? I got the cutting boards and have a hot knife attachment for my soldering iron so that's my plan right now. Teardrop shapes are the best... In my opinion that is because they can get fixed easy if you make a mistake and they look great!

Beautiful, Jason! Your wife finally swiped a cab you made! That's awesome. I bet that made you feel very good.

In my opinion that is because they can get fixed easy if you make a mistake and they look great! Thanks Perk! I thought the same "paint" thing when working those Seibers! I printed the templates off on photo paper. Then I put a laminate on both sides of the printout. I thought this was the easiest way to make them. They've been holding up very well so far. I have to respectfully disagree on the teardrop shape being the easiest to fix. I thought so when I first started making cabs...but once I started wire-wrapping, I noticed that any flaw in the symmetry of the teardrop is accentuated when it's wrapped. At least, that's been what I've encountered so far... Beautiful, Jason! Your wife finally swiped a cab you made! That's awesome. I bet that made you feel very good. Thanks Robin! I was shocked. I don't know how many times I asked "Really?" LOL - It did make me feel pretty good...until she gave the caveat that if she doesn't like how I wrap it, I could always sell it! LOL

Thanks for the tip on the templates! Now that I think about it more, teardrops are pretty dang hard to get perfect. I always mess up on the tip so I can just get it a little shorter and keep the symmetry going.

That I have had to do a couple times.

brybry I would be interested to know what county in GA the #1 material is from. It looks like a metamorphosed siltstone. There was a guy in Cleveland TN that swore he had Jade he found in GA, Barstow county. But it was a metamorphic siltstone. Took a way better polish than I expected.

WOOT, fanfreakintabulous brother! Loves every one. Thank you SO much...but you get at least half the credit for supplying the material! Harris Co. City of Hamilton, found it in my creek last year. And now you know where you need to go and find some more of this! LOL I'm still stoked it polished up as well as it did. I know grey isn't for everyone...but I really like it!

Harris Co. City of Hamilton, found it in my creek last year. Thanks, Never hunted that far south. There should be some metamorphics I am thinking and some cretaceous sediments as well near Columbus. I was thinking there was garnet schist near Montgomery AL

I'm stoked you got some material you hadn't worked yet. Everything is looking awesome brother! FYI, it takes no skill to put rocks/slabs in a box but it does to make them look like that.

There are giant slabs of black feldspar in the creek. North Columbus has some huge granite veins. Going to hound the creek hard this summer.

Beautiful cabs! Your polishes never fail to impress. I love the Dumortierite. It goes so well with denim. I'm not surprised your DW likes it.

The slab (from Georgia) looks a lot like Rocky Butte picture jasper. Given how good of a polish it took, my guess is that it is some sort of chert, or if you like it, jasper. (that's the difference between chert and jasper, remember?) The Dumortierite cabs are pretty. How hard it is? Does it polish well? It looks like your cabs have a slight orange feel finish but are nevertheless very shiny. Is that accurate? Slight orange peel + shiny doesn't bother me at all. Orange peel + matte finish bothers me. The Seiber "agate" is gorgeous. I've never cabbed it, however, because it somehow feels like cheating. It shouldn't really matter if glass is made by a natural process (obsidian) or a man-made process (Seiber). But for me, the magic of cabbing is taking something that came out of the ground and turning it into a "gem." Something of the awe is lost when it's man made material. This isn't a comment on your cabs -- which are well-executed and fun to look at, especially the second one!

As soon as I showed my wife the Dumortierite, she claimed a cab from it. I handed her the whole pile of stencils and said, "Pick a shape!" We'll see if she ends up liking the wrap...it'll be a "simple" one. The slab (from Georgia) looks a lot like Rocky Butte picture jasper. Given how good of a polish it took, my guess is that it is some sort of chert, or if you like it, jasper. (that's the difference between chert and jasper, remember?) The Dumortierite cabs are pretty. This isn't a comment on your cabs -- which are well-executed and fun to look at, especially the second one! I agree on the similarity to Rocky Butte...not quite the same degree of polish, but still shined very well nonetheless! I'm guessing the Dumortierite is around a 6 mohs. *Okay, I just looked it up and Google says 7 on the Mohs scale...but I thought it was a little softer than that.) You are correct on the orange peel. When my wife was looking at the slab, I told her I thought it was going to happen. I could see from the reflection of the black areas that the hardness was different than the blue. Pic 10 was the smoothest of the three...and it has the least amount of black in it as well. It shined well enough...definitely not matte. I look at materials like Seiber Agate or Goldstone when they're shaped like I have...they're still cabochons. I can understand some people wouldn't look at them with high regard, but I look at this way...they shaped, they shine, and I know they'll sell! LOL - Do I feel the same "awe" you describe with these as compared to a Teepee Canyon Agate cabochon? Nope...I sure don't!

Really loving that "agate" where did you find that? I'm not that big of a snob when it comes to man made. It's still a work of art and it takes time to transform it. Trust me, some people take beautiful rocks and do crappy work with them and basically ruin the material
