Thanks for tagging me. I've wondered a couple times if you had tried the colored water yet or not. I'll keep my eyes out for the results.

I think I would be worried that it was toxic- esp the yellow stuff.

Thanks for posting the pictures of your experiment. It's so interesting seeing what soaking it in water does. I'll be watching for the colored water test results.

I think I would be worried that it was toxic- esp the yellow stuff. Ya know I thought about that afterwards and washed my hands. But I probably should have been/be more careful since really dk what I'm dealing with

I sanded down the one on left in the pictures on 220 soft wheel and currently soaking. Il check on it in about a week and see what I got! Il be sure to tag you when I do!

Ok jasoninsd and hummingbirdstones here are the results...soaked a little less than a week in water colored blue with food coloring.one dry and one wet pic.. I will say the pics look a bit better than in hand. I scrubbed it with soap and toothbrush and didn't seem to affect it. Thanks jasoninsd for the suggestion! I'm going to play around with this material some more and see what I can come up with!

That looks pretty cool -but will the surface take a polish. the dry photo looks kind of rough.

Do you have any idea what it is? Maybe those are asbestos fibers?

Do you have any idea what it is? Maybe those are asbestos fibers? I do not. I posted the rock in an I'd thread and @jadedvision replied with the below info. That's all I've been going off of. Probably should do more research tho. @jadedvision said:The dark colored needles are likely horneblende, the metallic look is owed to manganese in the horneblende. The rock as a whole might be gneiss, schist, or amphibolite. All of those can contain a lot of horneblende.

I really am surprised that the blue took in that stone as well as it did. I think it looks cool, even if it has a texture.

I wonder if you should seal the surface (acrylic spray, epoxy, etc) so you can preserve the color. It's pretty cool and a pity for it to wind up as just an experiment on the shelf :-)

oldschoolrocker - How freakin' cool did that turn out!!! Now that you know it works...it's going to open up all kind of other cool color options.
