Thought I'd show how I straighten wire.
First I use copper wire only, and anything smaller than 20 gunge, I just use my nylon jaw pliers if needed.
This is how I do heavy gauge.
First you clamp one end in a vise, and pull the other end out with a pair of pliers. I use a small vice grip.
Then I clamp my leather jaw wooden ring clamp on the wire, with the wedge in pretty tight, and just pull the ring clamp the length of the wire once or twice & Bob's yer Uncle.
With 2 people you can do a really long length like this- but short lengths, it's easy enough for one person.
It's a variation of peoples idea of pulling the wire through your fingers, only the leather jaw on the ring clamp can put a lot more pressure on it, so good for heavier stuff.
Works for me.

liveoak I like your method, it would polish the wire nicely as well. When I needed to straighten coil set wire for inserts in molded pieces at work, the tool and die guy I learned from had a set of rollers that bent it back and forth, then pulled it through a conveyor tractor and made it practically laser straight. Anything that breaks up the molecular direction, then redirects it will work. We just have to consider what else it does to the metal in the process. I have a big coil of some type of hard brass square wire in a box somewhere, perhaps if I ever find it I will play with it, but the hardness and stiffness is right up there with Argentium, which me and my somewhat arthritic thumbs hate.

Ok, so now I'm going to throw my 2 cents into this. When I have a really knarly piece of wire that I need to straighten, this is how I do it. I learned this method many moons ago by reading posts on Orchid (Ganoskin). Thanks for posting this Robin! Both of the ways mentioned are great alternatives for a guy like me who can't seem to figure out fingers and a cloth! LOL Don't think for a second the irony doesn't escape me...you know, the fact I feel the need to take a wire that has a bend in it, make it ruler-edge straight...just to put the bend back in it! LOL - For whatever reason, if there's a slight bend in the wire, it bugs me to start the wrap! LOL Thought I'd show how I straighten wire.

Patty, thanks for posting this! Again, another great alternative for me (and others) to try!! liveoak I like your method, it would polish the wire nicely as well. Thanks for chiming in again Lee! It sounds like that conveyor tractor is the same concept as the white wire-straightener that was in the first pictures I posted. I should also mention I would never try my drill method on anything but copper. I wouldn't dream of doing it with silver...especially Argentium!

jasoninsdI got one of these wire straightener doohickeys from Rio Grande. It works pretty well. Put the wire across the rollers, fold it on the hinges and squeeze it in your hand, grab the end of the wire with pliers and pull it through. Once is usually enough. If the wire is kinked up a little, it might need to go through twice. I imagine that it work hardens the wire a little. I also noticed that it might twist square wire.

Oh yeah! Now I see it. I got my Optivisor today so I am ready to try another groove wrap. I have a dumotierite cab to try. It’s got a pretty shallow groove but I kind of like the looks of the wire on the perimeter of the stone.

I am SO not opposed to the wire showing on a groove wrap...in fact, I think it can look good so long as what is showing of the wire stays uniform around the perimeter...if that makes sense. I think it can look like a subtle "frame" that way.

Since I'm late to the party, I don't have anything to add but I do wonder why we can't make fun of your "SUPERHERO SCRAP WIRE CUP"? If we can't do that then can we make fun of the bunch of clothespins or the upside down gorilla glue? Asking for a friend....:-)

I'll PM you. Thanks for seeing this Tela. Since I'm late to the party, I don't have anything to add but I do wonder why we can't make fun of your "SUPERHERO SCRAP WIRE CUP"? If we can't do that then can we make fun of the bunch of clothespins or the upside down gorilla glue? Asking for a friend....:-) It's always a "friend" that causes problems! LOL I'm such a nerd...I love superhero movies...or anything that's based on comic books. I was a comic book collector when I was a lot younger...so it's really awesome to see them "come to life" on the big screen. (For the most part) they're always about good vanquishing evil...and I'm a sucker for that. Keeping the glue upside down only makes sense to me...that way it's always down by the opening. If I could store the ketchup bottle upside down in the fridge, I would! LOL The clothespins are when I have a wedge-cut (or end-cut) preform that won't allow the dop to be glued on when it's upside down. I put he clothespins on the dop, so it'll stay upright. Since I'm late to the party, I don't have anything to add but I do wonder why we can't make fun of your "SUPERHERO SCRAP WIRE CUP"? If we can't do that then can we make fun of the bunch of clothespins or the upside down gorilla glue? Asking for a friend....:-) I CAN NOT unsee that Super Hero Scrap Wire Cup now! LOL! Thanks Perk! I thoroughly enjoy doing wire-wrapping in the evenings. Most nights I don't care what's on TV, so my wife watches "her" shows. With me wire-wrapping at the table, it still allows us to spend "together" time! LOL You are lucky, I can hardly stand to be in the same room with my wife for more than the time it takes to watch Jeopardy. Maybe it's me that is the problem. If you let her pick something on TV she likes...then you can spend the full 60 minutes talking sh!t about the show...then it'll turn into a reall sh!t-show! LOL

jasoninsd- DH 3D printed a stand that will hold a bottle of his Eileen's Tacky Glue upside down while he is working. Not quite as elegant as your solution, but he thinks it's neat.

This is what he made. It even has little holes for screwing it down to something, but it never tips over. He said he could print you one.

Would you please extend my very sincere appreciation for the offer? Please let him know the footprint for my dining table workbench is relatively small...and the little tote is serving multiple purposes - so I better not try and add anything more to the mess supplies! LOL Also let him know I already owe his wife some slabs that I haven't forgotten about! LOL
