This is a Galesburg rock shop find, not local.

Looks like serpentine. How hard is it? Serpentine is pretty soft.

Sure looks like jade or serpentine but a hard nail or tap from your hammer will tell for sure. Jade is harder than serpintine and usually a nail will not scratch it. Jade dings when struck, serpentine makes dull thumps.

Well it doesn't scratch with a nail screw but a steak knife made a small indent and it sounds like two cue balls hitting each other when I hit with a hammer.

If so, yes, it is the same consistency and scratches with the steak knife.

The two edges Jade is most often found where water is or was running like rivers and therefore generally have smooth rounded surfaces. So I am leaning more towards serpentine.

Yohs Guys believe the rock to the left is serpentine really does resemble yours Chad ezcept mine doesn't seem to have the quartz crystallization that appears in your yours o well this starts getting confusing real quick.... The black rock on right is what I originally thought was the matrix that the green in your serp was encased in. assuming my black rock is silicfied quartz I found it. Thought it was cool Lots of quartz here as that black flavoring Wonder what that may be? The big white chunk that the two rocks are displayed on Is some sort of talcy consistency limestone, I think found it in the Salt River, A fairly unusual specimen I would think. I don’t have the eyes for fossil butte it wouldn’t surprise me If there is something embedded it …

I'm going to run it in a tumbler for a week and see what happens, that should tell me how it will continue to turn out. It's one of those rocks I have that I'm not really sure what to do with, not big enough for a book end. It's pretty though...
mohs I agree, Ed it looks similar to what you presented. Fingers crossed it turns out well

I've got a lot of serpentine in my yard and it looks a lot like what you have there. What I have breaks off in layers and leaves sharp edges.
