I took this piece of Montana petrified wood from rough to cab this week. Would love to turn pro someday but for now just really loving the process. Suggestions welcome though - I have only been doing this a few months, and don't really know everything I'm looking for in a cab that's worth money.

Nice grain in that cab & your polish looks good.
Nice job. Welcome to the forum BTW,

Great cab. Self taught, or had guidance?

I'm somewhat different from the last poster, in that I would be quite excited about that cab - The dome is near perfect, as you can see from the even reflection band across it. The polish also looks like you really gave it some care - I think it's very well done!
Petrified wood is something I've always been interested in - There is so much variety, and room for creativity with it, with so many colors and figures in it. There's even a guy on this forum, that has devoted a huge amount of his time and effort to locating and documenting sites in the state of Alabama, that have deposits of it. It's a wonderful material to work with, and I hope you do more with it - You are obviously off to a good start.
My husband has been a custom carpenter and woodworker for much of his working life, and so I have seen a LOT of fine woodworking, and I still get excited when I see good work, whether it's in wood or stone - And I like your cab! Keep up the good work, and you'll fit right in here :-)

Kind of odd. I'm on a desktop and there is no image in the first post. There's a large blank blue space with the 3 sentences at the bottom.

I actually don't in this case Ashley. Whatever the OP did to add the video, my laptop won't display the video (like rockbrain stated). HOWEVER, my laptop is downloading an mp4 Quicktime movie onto my computer. I'm not a fan of that - and I won't open something that has to be "downloaded" onto my PC...so when I open a thread that does that (like this one), I have to go into the download folder, delete the mp4 file...then I don't go back into the thread again because I don't want something that I didn't request downloading to my computer. (Not saying anyone who posts this way is intending something malicious...I just don't trust anything that I didn't "request" to be downloaded.)

When I log on with my ipad, I see it just like you see it. No video, just empty space. But on my desktop the video auto-plays. I really want to use these forums - tons of wisdom here, but I spent like an hour trying to set up cloudinary and integrate this stupid 9 second video, only to find it's just not working. I don't know what I did wrong. I followed the directions in the forums, but it doesn't seem to be working consistently. When I used the "insert" function it just added a link instead of integrating in-line. I'm sorry to say I don't know what's going on either.

I didn't do anything weird. I followed the directions, created a cloudinary account, and still had to re-do everything like 10x to get anything to work. Seriously it took me an hour to create this post this morning. But I don't appreciate any auto-download garbage either. I don't even like having to click a link to see a picture. (Which is why I spent an hour trying to get this stupid video to integrate.) I don't know what's going on, but I guess I just won't be able to post video or pictures here.

I have found cloundinary works perfectly for photos, so don't give up RockingRuralMo But I've decided I must use it differently than other people.
I followed the tutorial, and set up my Cloundinary account first. But, when I post photos I first open cloundinary's home page, & sign in.
Then I upload any photos I want to post in my account.
Then I go to the forum, and start my post.
I DON'T use that Cloundinary Upload button at the top of the "create post" page, instead I use the little icon to insert an image.
I go back to cloundinary's site and copy the link, which I paste in the pop up box .
It works perfectly every time.
I know , I know you're supposed to just hit that button.
But I'm used to the old photo bucket thing & that's the way I did it then, so I stuck with that.
I didn't have any luck with a video on cloundinary though.
Anyway, hope this helps.

Try this instead- forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/99564/members-upload-photos-using-cloudinary it is easier. It will buy you time to set up your own account. This avoids the tutorial. Please give it a shot.

Have you tried drag and drop? It works a charm for me.

I guess I'll have to try it. Thanks Tela. I hope all this photo nonsense doesn't scare you off RockingRuralMo. It's worth the time. Patty

RockingRuralMo - I just opened your video from inside my browser. Videos are confusing to upload to the forum for me. The easiest way I've found is to upload to YouTube and then just click the share button, copy the link and just paste it in your post. Once you click the Create Post button, the video will automatically show on the forum.

I hope you don't think I was pointing fingers at you personally...It wasn't you...just the hoopla of whatever's happening. You're not the only one posting videos that I have the same issue with. Please hang in there. I know it can be frustrating. Another option. I don't use Cloudinary at all. Since all my pics are taken with my phone, I just use the Tapatalk app to post pictures. It is literally one of the easiest ways I've found for posting pics on a forum. For the few videos I've linked to, I do like Robin...post them to YouTube, then paste the link to YouTube in my post. (Not trying to beat a dead horse...but the video downloaded to my laptop three times with me replying to you. Once when I opened the thread...another time when I opened up the reply page...and then again when I created the reply post! LOL)

Great job on your pet wood cab. The shape and polish look fine to me in the above photo. Thanks for posting.

Great cab. Self taught, or had guidance? Thank You!
I didn't have any local lapidaries to learn from, but I can't claim to have been on my own. Youtube, Reddit, and forums like this have been fantastically helpful. I just keep reading, looking at pictures, watching tutorial videos, and trying to do better at planning and executing good pieces. Some pieces I've re-worked over and over, but the chase is great!
