Took a neighbor fossil hunting today near Pine Mountain above Ojai, Ca along a river bottom. I love that you can find marine fossils at a 4,000 foot elevation. The area is best known for sand dollar and brittle star fossils. Today we brought back some more basic items. Found a sand dollar, some turitella-like shells, and lots of oyster. The most interesting are as follows: Snail: ![](http://i996.photobucket.com/albums/af89/3lementary/PICT0006-6.jpg) Vertebrae (possible whale) [(edit) my wife, who is an archeologist specializing in coastal native american tribes, says it looks more like it's from a seal or similar marine mammal...] ![](http://i996.photobucket.com/albums/af89/3lementary/PICT0010-6.jpg) ![](http://i996.photobucket.com/albums/af89/3lementary/PICT0009-8.jpg) ![](http://i996.photobucket.com/albums/af89/3lementary/PICT0008-7.jpg) And marine worm castings? ![](http://i996.photobucket.com/albums/af89/3lementary/PICT0015-3.jpg) ![](http://i996.photobucket.com/albums/af89/3lementary/PICT0013-2.jpg) ![](http://i996.photobucket.com/albums/af89/3lementary/PICT0012-3.jpg) Thanks for looking, Lowell

The fossil rock is as said "Clam Chowder Rock" or it is also called as "Devil's Toenails" in the Agate Index Vol 5 for Texas.
(Just a shameless plug for the usefulness of the Agate/Jasper Database that's out there....)
Oh, by the way, great cabs!

My, that is excellent! That really looks like crazy lace in how it came out in some photos. As for your other comments, I prefer the matrix included.
Great job and please, show all your balls in the future!
Er....uh... you know what I mean...

Lovely pair of coconut geodes (Las Choyas) you've cut there!!!!
It's always nice when purple appears!!!
As they say in Hawaii - Mahallow!
The second specimen looks to have tiny specks of another mineral sprinkled here and there. Zeitner and Cross's _Geodes Nature's Treasures_ book indicates that hematite appears in 50 to 75% of these geodes and appears as tiny inclusions in the shape of spheres (or rosettes) of black, brown, or red.
But don't trust me, I'm not a mineralolologist...

To all,
I want to thank those who have given us permission to use your photos for the Agate Index.
If you would like us to use your photos but don't have time to post them again on the Identification section, just respond here that you give us permission, and I will go through the old postings and take the photos from there.
We thank you for your support. This project is for your benefit,
Lowell and Mel
