Hi everyone,
I have a quick question ...
I re-charged my 10# Gy-Roc Vib Tumbler tonight. I did not remove the old slurry ... I just added new 220 to the mix.
Is it advisable to rinse and re-charge or just re-charge?
I'm open to any suggestions/recommendations.
Thanks,
John

John, How long had it been running before the recharge? And what are you running? Some stones make more mud that others. I run a vibe, as you do, and I check every 12 to 24 hours and always rinse and recharge. Mostly I want to see the progress and that takes rinsing, so, of course, I have to recharge and add water. If the slurry is not too thick and you can rinse a little off and see grit in the sink, just add a teaspoon of water. Remember, in a vibe you want very little water, but not a slurry so thick that the rocks get "stuck in the muck". I've found if the slurry gets a light shade of gray, it's time to rinse and recharge. in the polish stage the slurry can be a paste, it is so soft the rocks will tumble well and still get the maximum benefit. But what do I know from rocks Bottom line, in the vibe, I rinse and re charge about every 12 hours. cookie

Hello Cookie, Thanks ... I need to rinse then ... I have a mixed batch of agates and some jaspers as filler. It has been right at 4 days since I started the 220 grit up. And yes, it's mucky! I'll definitely have to get it rinsed out and re-charged tomorrow. I have been putting 8 TBSP of 220 with 8 pounds of rocks, with about a cup to cup and a half of water ... and they really get to rolling. I'll git-er-done tomorrow Thanks, John

Hey John, You really want to equate youre water and grit, depending on wether the rocks are wet or dry, with maybe 1 or 2 extra tbls. I'm not familiar with a 10# bowl, but think in terms of grit to water. Equal parts and then add by tablespons. A cup or more, even in 8 tablespoons, sounds like too much to me. I really reduced the water on my last batch, which was flint, and kept a close eye on it. Wet candy smooth! Good luck

Ok, these two have the vibes covered, what about tumblers now?
Do you rinse and re-charge or just add grit? Curious minds want to know! LOL

High Rose, with my rotary tumblers I always rinse and recharge with fresh grit. If you don't I believe you would probably wind up with a lot of mud that really isn't doing much of anything. I'm sure someone else will have a completly different opinion but thats just mine. In the end most of us come up with our own proceedures. Even our own techniques tend to change from time to time.

Mine's been tumbling for 2 days now so I had to take a look. Again, it was filled with foam, right up to the top of the lid. I scraped the foam off into another container and added water to it so it would settle down some. As I suspected, there was alot of grit floating in the foam, probably about 1/8 of a teaspoon. I didn't recharge it as I wanted to wait for some answers here first but I think I'm going to give it one more day, then I'll recharge tomorrow. Thanks for your help. [glow=red,2,300]~ Cher ~[/glow]

Hello again,
I rinsed and re-charged this morning. I'll keep an eye onit and see how it's going.
8 pounds of rock +/- 8 good sized tablespoons of 220 grit less than one cup of water (around 7/8 or so) Turned it on and the rotation was a lot better and it didn't appear to be too wet. I'll see what it looks like as of tomorrow morning.
Thanks for the advise ...
John

Just a quick update ... After cleaning everything about three times , I culled out the stones with cavities (that may have been a problem) and I started the 400 grit this morning. I'll see how things look this coming friday and possibly get to the 600 grit then. My 400 charge consists of: 8 pounds of rock +/- 8 TBSP plastic pellets 8 TBSP 400 grit 3/4 C water and a pinch of there you go ... ;D We'll keep you up to date, as to my progress/failures Enjoy the weekend, John

Hello everyone,
Just a quick update ...
I am now on my final polish, and I should be ready to take them out on Thursday and see if they are done ;D
When I cleaned the stones from the pre-polish ... they already had a pretty nice shine on them ... so, I am hoping for a good batch.
I'll keep you posted on Thursday, as to how they turned out and might even get a photo or two.
See ya on Thursday,
John
