Is there anything I should know about jasper which could be a problem? If not, this will be my next mineral and I will post the progress here. Thank you.

Be aware, jasper produces more gas than usual tumbles. I have heard horror stories but I have never experienced those. It seems most gasses are produced in the first two charges.

keep an eye on your barrels and "burp" them every day or two. just open them up and release any gas, clean the top and put them back on. i don't know what kind of tumbler you use but with my lortones the bottom of the barrel starts sucking inward when there is gas. like doc said it usually clears up after the 1st 2 stages but still keep your eye on it. jaspers are hard so you may have to run them longer in 60/90 than you are use to for shaping but it pays off. what kind of jaspers do you have and where did you get them?

Haven't got them yet. Planning to use the Rock Shed. Thanks for warning about the burping, I guess every rock has its little foibles. Anything else I should be aware of?

Well, my flint+agate foamed a little at first. It would be a headache, but better than hematite. Hematite, btw, will probably be my one after next...already have the rubber gloves.

Welp, I just started. Somehow, I got 10 pounds instead of 5, so I guess I double clicked or something. No problemo, it will just be longer till I order again. I saw the 5 pounds filled the barrel (I'm only using one barrel, as "burping" them is such an angina in the gluteus maximus), so I took out about a third and will make three loads out of the whole shipment.Put in the water, 4 heaping tablespoons of 60/90 and started her up. BTW, I got 3 small tootsierolls, one pepermint and one butterscotch.

Ahh...people, I just went to burp the jasper. No foam, although the water looks like chocolate milk and the rocks are already starting to smooth slightly. No pop when I opened it, either. So I cleaned the SiC silt off the rim and started it again. Not that I WANT to burp it every day, but am I doing something wrong?

nope, sounds like you are getting good results so far. if your foam has subsided you don't necessarily have to check everyday....

mazanec - some have more gas than others. but you never know which ones. if i can't tell by looking at my barrel i can usually tell as i open it and get a long or short hissing sound sometimes with a smell kind of like a rock fart. your rocks might have had a silent fart. ;D you'll be able to judge as you go along if you can wait 2 or 3 days to release the gas or need to do it daily. i find mine worse when i start a new batch of rough and as they keep going even when i add more rough it's not quite as bad. then it eases up as i go on through the stages.

You may want to call the "bomb squad" or "fire department" if you wait 3-5 days before opening the lid--It could get pretty ugly--BOOM! baby BOOM!!!!!

I have done jasper that did not recquire burping. I watch the end of the drum. When it gets distended I burp it. I have never had an explosion, although I did once experiment with corn meal once. I burped it and burped it. I relaxed thinking it had settled down. When it let go, I ended up retexturing the room. Jasper usually telegraphs when it is getting full.
