Hi,
My wife and I recently started getting into rock tumbling when our grandson gave us a small tumbler. So we are very new and green to this. We enjoy being out in nature looking for rocks but we really would like to find agates and that seems practically impossible. 99% of our buckets are 'pretty rocks'. We're both eager to learn about rocks and what to do with them once you find them. We're right at the age of nearing retirement and thought this would be another good hobby.
We went to 2 agate shows this summer for the first time. That was very interesting. We have a lot to learn about where to look, what to look for, what to do with the rocks after finding them, the equipment used, etc. We live in SE Minnesota where there are lots of streams and rivers. We love going to the north shore looking for rocks. We'll see where this new interest takes us.

Some of the Lake Superior (northern rock shops in general) have identification aids and synopses of the kinds of rocks you are likely to find in your region. In my experience after you pickup somewhere around a thousand rocks and examine them carefully, you develop the ability to tell an agate, from a "rock". It comes down to texture and pattern as much as to region or The hunt is part of the fun and a beautiful rock at the end of the hunt is even better. Welcome.

timpondyWelcome from Idaho. You shouldn’t need to go too far to find Lake Superior Agates. Lapidary arts are a great hobby. I’ve been working with rocks for 35 years or so. After I retired, the hobby kind of exploded. It’s good to have you guys here.

timpondy Well someone already beat me to it but check out Michigan Rocks on youtube. Then you'll find some others from around that same area, I can't remember their names. I'm jealous of the rocks that are found in and around the Great Lakes! Welcome!
