RTHlings are so great about sending good thoughts and prayers, I have a request.
The recent storm that went through greatly crippled the area I used to live in. Some of my friends are still without electricity.
8" of snow may not seem like much to some, but it was. A wet, heavy snow on top of .1 to .2" of ice. High winds. These combined to cause a lot of trees, tree limbs and power lines to come down. There was also a failure at a power plant in the area.
As of today, there are power companies from 8 states in the area doing clean up. Many roads are still impassable due to downed power lines preventing snow plowing. Some schools in the worst hit areas are still closed today.
It is a heavily wooded, rural area. The county seat, Ladysmith, only has about 3000 residents. The entire county is one of the least populated in the state. A very impoverished area, too.
If you feel inclined, please keep the area in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you.

My heart always goes out to those effected by natural disasters. It's much too cold to be without power.

At least some schools that have generators are open as warming shelters. If people without electricity can get to them. They are serving food, too.

Agreed. Sending good thoughts to those folks and the electric crews that they get the power back on quickly.

Yes. Thoughts and prayers for the people without the power...and the lineman risking what they do so people can get their power back!

Thank you all. I received an email from a long time friend yesterday. His family was without power until Friday morning. His 80+ mom will likely be without power for several more days. He said several trees came down in her yard, hitting the lead in electric wires. He said her yard is a tangled mess of trees and wires. Thankfully, they do not block the driveway or door and are a safe distance from house.
A crew disconnected power at her pole transformer, so when the electric comes back on the main line there is no fire potential.
There was about 16" of heavy snow on top of ice there. He is slowly working on getting chains on his very cool tractor so he can dig them out.

Next week there are predicted wind chills of up to -40 by me. Maybe higher further North. I hope those who still do not have power have the means to be somewhere safe and can prevent damage to their house. Those who farm, have no choice, but to remain where they are and care for their farm.
This happens way too often here. A major snow/ice storm and then extremely low temps. Tempts in the negative teens and high winds are uncommon here in December. That usually happens in January.
Good news is that above freezing temps are predicted for Christmas weekend.

We've got a serious cold snap coming this week as well. If the winds pick up like they were this week, wind chills are going to be amazingly low. Thoughts and prayers for SO many people being affected by SO many things right now.
