I am going to put my first batch of rocks into the next step of grit.
What is best way to wash them between stages?

You can tumble them with borax for a couple of hours or you can use Ivory soap shavings.
2 tablespoons borax in a 3 pound barrel. Don't know about the Ivory, haven't tried that yet.

Seems to me that I've heard a few mentioning Cascade dishwasher soap. Being that your going to the medium grit, I don't know that I'd worry about it too much. Someone else pointed out that by the time your ready to move on to step 2 the grit you used in step 1 is already that small. The grit gets reduced as it's tumbling as well. Now, if you were going to a polish stage, then I'd want to make sure they are clean. If you're really worried, take an old toothbrush and scrub them. The only thing you really need to be looking for is rocks that still have places where grit can get stuck in.

yeh, don't sweat it, bunny, and don't use anything with bleach in it! get some borax for your next change over (from medium to prepolish), and just really clean everything, including your barrel and lid very well.
good luck! KD

Bunny, I use Ivory soap shavings, Cascade and even Dawn dishwashing liquid once. I think you can use anything that doesn't have bleach or any kind of abrasive (Comet would be out of the question! ;D) in it.
I finally found some Borax the other day, so guess I'll be using it now.

I ended up calling my sister and she had some Ivory, hahaha
I posted some pictures (not very good one, need practice taking the pictures) in the picture section.
I was very please how good they looked already, so am excited about getting them into the polish stage.
Do you leave them in the second stage grit for about a week too?

I got some 20 mule team borax too, but now i just have to wait until some rocks are actually ready to use it on. Patience!! How much would liquified patience cost if they marketed it?

I will say the only problem that I had with using Ivory is it gummed up and coated the rocks leaving me with more of a mess than I started with. I have found borax alot easier to use. Tami
