So, brand new to tumbling. I had a random thought. I am installing a new toilet next weekend. Wondering if I could crush my old one up and tumble the shards for porcelain media? Anyone ever try it? I'm brand new to tumbling, always dreamt of having one as a kid. Dad shot it dad hard. Now that I'm a dad my kid expressed an interest I jumped at the opportunity. So we are starting on this together. 6 days into our first batch! My first of likely very many threads!

Welcome to the forum from Southern CA. Can't say I've used your porcelain media, but I don't see the harm in trying to see what happens with it. This comes from someone who would try to tumble just about anything just to see what happens. OK, I just checked with a Google search. Porcelain may have a Mohs hardness of 7.0 which is very similar to agates and jaspers you should be trying to tumble as a newbie. Even if it is the same hardness, you can use the porcelain as your smalls which will help you with fillers in your barrel.

Welcome to the forum.
I don't know if it would be worth it to break up a toilet to be used for media. One issue would be the glazed surfaces, which would be too smooth and would have no grip or abrasive action. The other issue would be the very sharp shards. How hard would they be on the barrels until blunted.

I'd go for it! I've used broken dishes as media filler. Just start the pieces in coarse grit to smooth the pieces out. Porcelain is softer than rocks (so no harm to the barrels) and the sharp edges and the glaze wear off quickly.
