Peta, those are some GREAT examples of Nether's Farm Flint! I can't remember if you've worked this material or not, but it's really fun to work. It takes a GREAT polish!!

I hadn't before now, however I did start my cab for the self collected competition yesterday! I'm only on the 3000 disk and it looks amazing!! Not the best sample patterning-wise, but I'm happy with it so far

Flint is usually one of those materials for me! LOL If I remember correctly, the "pattern flint" is further down under the surface out at the Farm. The top layers are usually that gray toned stuff...

Yes - that was my understanding too. We found a decent scattering of color, but the majority was the gray - still seemed to be some patterns, etc in some of it though, so we'll see - will tumble most of it anyways, I think. Planning another trip for fall when it's cooler.

Congratulations. Glad you made it out. Is this for first real rockhounding outing looking for specific material? Yes!! It was quite fun! I have so many places on my list I want to go, but living in Ohio I feel I'm quite removed from a lot of it. NY is close enough to go see if I can find herkimers, but I don't know what you'd do with them once you had them? I really want to find myself in the desert lol...Seems to be lots of opportunities there.

As always heat treat it to make colors pop. Turkey roaster Remove pan Layer kitty litter Layer rock Layer kitty litter Repeat til full Fill to mounded up Put lid on Cook at 200 for several hours to get moisture out of rock Then raise temp 50 degree until its maxed out Let rocks soak in max temp a few hours Reduce temp same as raising Let sit turned off for 24 hours No.peaking Then open and look at your pretty colors

I've never heard of doing this. Is that because of what it is? Does the heat do anything to the stability of the rock? When you say max temp - do you mean to 500 degrees? Lastly - will this remove the staining that's on much of the rock? Thanks!!

Wow, congrats! It looks like you found some beautiful stuff and just in time for this months competition. I've already got one in progress!! I'm super excited how much of a shine it's taken and I'm only on the 3000 smoothing disc. Still have to polish.

Wow. Those are some awesome finds for surface collecting! Really cool!! Thanks!! I'm excited to see how they turn out tumbled. Started my first cab with it and so far amazing! Thanks!! I'm happy with it - I do have paper cut finger tips, but I guess that's to be expected lol...

LOL. I’ve always got little cuts on my finger tips from rocks. They turn to callus eventually.
