My first topic I’d like to discuss is my 15” Beacon Star lap.
I bought it in like new condition, original equipment. In the years I’ve owned it I have used it twice. By twice I mean starting with the lowest to highest grits. It worked well in the beginning but the vibrating action began to slow to a crawl as if the motor was on the out. We made the decision to get a new motor from Covington but this doesn’t seem to be the solution. My husband said the shaft isn’t correct.
I like this lap and would appreciate any advice.
Thank you!

Here are some things to check: there are rubber balls between the pan and the base. As they get older, then get flattened and can also harden. Maybe yours need replacing? Check the springs. I had one break on my lap. The action slowed noticeably but it wasnt obvious that a spring had broke. Is the grinding pan dished? Place a straight edge across the bottom of the pan. Over time, the center of the pan wears more than the outer edges. This will cause the rocks to cluster more in the middle and not move around as much. Check the counter weight on the motor shaft. Unlikely, but maybe part of it broke off or something. Maybe the setscrew holding it in place is loose? While your there try wiggling the motor shaft back and forth. If there is noticeable play in the shaft, could be that the motor bearings are worn. What do you mean by "the shaft isn't correct"?
