I went rock hunting last weekend. You can see all the petrified wood I found in my introduction post for newcomers. I wanted to go this weekend, but the heat is BRUTAL. The ATX area is at 36 days of temperature over 100. We have been hovering around 105 F for a while now. The heat index reached 117 one day but is normally around 108 to 110.

We are just East of Austin, and it's so hot you can't do anything but swim after 11am! The heat is brutal as you said! I use my rock saw and lap outside, so I packed them away for a few months . . .

After I liked you're post I hit myself on the head- there's nothing likeable about the heat right now !
Be thankful for your AC, and play with your rocks indoors for the time being

It was 100 F in the garage yesterday late afternoon, still worked out there and cleaned out the Vib Lap and moved the rocks to 600 SiC. The temp hit 104 about 4:30 with 41% humidity which is about 119 on the heat Index. It seems that growing up in Houston with no A/C in the house and not seeing 100% A/C school until I started University of Houston has altered my genetic makeup to make me very heat tolerant. As long a person is acclimated and drinks his water, wears a wide brim hat and preferably long sleeves long pants and a hat in the sun and paces themselves they can do alright. That and I cut the beer almost out completely as alcohol is a real dehydrator.

We use fans a LOT around the property & would recommend an exhaust fan for your garage, if you don't already have one. @hankrocks. Just having moving air makes a difference. My husband has a large insulated pole barn shop, and he put a large exhaust fan up in the gable. Surprisingly it lowers the temp in the buildings noticeably. The outside fan we have is actually out of a chicken barn - it's maybe about 4' diameter & turns pretty slow, but very powerful- you can feel the wind from it 40' away. But it's still hot & the humidity in NW Florida just doesn't quit & fogs up your glasses when you come out of the air conditioned house. Patty.... glad her studio is air conditioned- too bad her rock saw & band saw aren't .

I feel ya too. Doing mostly roof work out here. It was 112 the other day, the screws were so hot they would burn your hands if you weren’t careful!

Be careful quartzilla !

Out here in Oregon in the high desert we were in the low hundreds. I would go out just as the sun was coming up. Get out there around 5 and start walking to my destination. I’d normally be back to the truck around 9’ish and packing up. Heat can’t stop me. There are rocks to find.

realrockhound Acting like a nut is a good way to keep people away from your spot. One of these days, before I pass on, I’m dropping a map to all my spots.
